OK, doing some research and the Town of Clayton's website is not working today. What are the rules regarding operating a home based business if the S/D's restrictive covenants don't prohibit it?? Anyone got any experience with this?
You need a license to operate a businees within the town limits. If I remember right, it costs $50/yr.
Not sure about that. They didn't have a problem with me. My business was running a website (similar to 4042). If their website is down, you could go 20th century and give them a phone call.
You could call and ask them to send you a copy of the zoning requirements for a home-based business, without getting into detail about why you want it. I know in Selma there were certain requirements that were not hard to meet, can't remember all the details but it had to do with how much traffic there could be on a daily basis, what size sign you could use; if I recall correctly, it had to be in your house, not a separate building. Anyway, once you get the ordinance, you can look it over and proceed from there.

Depends on what kind of "Home based business" you want to start. Zoning laws definitely cover such businesses as garages, restaurants, bars, brothels, etc. As long as you're operating a one person, office type business, you're probably allright, with the emphasis on 'probably'. Be sure to check with town Zoning office for your specific application.
Like everyone else said, it's all depends on your business type. If it's food-related, food and health inspection are a must in your home. As for zoning, if you're planning to have customers come to your house, yes, it's required, depending if you lives in county or city. County is more flexible than city. You don't need to worry about zoning if you don't plan to have your customers come over to your house. Advertising in front of your home - again, it depends. The subdivision where I'm living at - we're not allowed. I only use magnet signs on my vehicle and business cards to pass out. Don't forget about taxes. There's sale tax, food tax, and more. Talk to Score online - it's a great website for you to learn and there are experts who are willing to help you for FREE. Good luck!
THanks again everyone, but it wasn't for me, doing some research for a friend. We found out what we needed. Many thanks!
