Harvey, I have always and will continue to be an advocate for a day off for elections. As stated above I have more than one reason for it. The person was just making a suggestion as to how we might get more people out. Although I don't think those who do not vote regularly will do so just because we have a day off one never knows. I was notgoing to vote for the transfer tax, but had decided to vote for the saels tax, as everyone woudl pay not just homeowners. But when I read the ballot, it did not say the tax woudlbe used for schools, so i voted no. I would have voted yes on a 1% sales tax with money going to schools. I heard thsi morning that every single trasnfer tax was defeated. One county was 97% - 3%.
So, instead of forcing me to pay a fee just because I want to move from an Clayton apartment, to a Clayton house. I don't have to pay a fee now. Thanks to all. Once. And, for those of you who believe that if the tax proposals had passed, Johnston County wouldn't raise property taxes (or reassess property values), dream on.
that's exactly what 2 county commissioners told me. when i explained the main reason both issues were defeated they said they need more $$$ and since the public did not like either of the proposals then property taxes will increase. a town of clayton commissioner advised the town did not need to raise property taxes. let's just wait and see what they do when the county increases property taxes. i bet they get their increase too.
If they do, get rid of the commissioners that voted for it. I've been living here for quite a while now and NC politics baffle me. Your elected leaders screw you left and right in full view of the public and yet y'all re-elect them time and again.
please keep us updated. i am praying for a miracle. we do not need holder on the town council. someone told me he said he personally knocked on every door in the town of clayton for his bid for council. i applaud him for his efforts but this is one individual that we do not need on the town council. i hope butch prevails. if there is a re-vote there will be less voters. although the turnout was dismal the tax issue brought out some voters. this was a local issue vote only. with no state or national elections on the ballot the turnout is always low. and if the only problem was west clayton why would all the precincts have to re-vote?
Yet one more to blame on the people. If you can't get involved, don't complain when taxes are raised and services are cut.
This is true, if some of you were so hell bent on getting that transfer tax put in place, you should have gotten your behinds organized and done something about it. Instead, you want to complain that an organization spent money to advertise their point of view. No one twisted anyone's arm to stay away from the polls, or kept anyone from doing the exact same thing for the opposing veiw point.
I will keep everyone abreast. I am stepping out for a while but will get called on my cell and when I get home will update. The re-vote would be because it was not just at West Clayton it also occurred in downtown Clayton. Yes, Art knocked on doors but I still don't think he is the person to help lead us. Grace
Average citizens just don't have the money that the lobbyist do. The literature that was sent over and over again to homes to vote "No" was well funded. We will see how it goes. Grace
Over and over again? I didn't get one piece of mail.....................I got one, single solitary phone call.
We received numerous amounts of the vote "No" mail. Each time they were addressed to each individual voter in the household. I still have some to use as fans when attending swim meets. We not only were bombarded with mail we received numerous telephone calls. It really got old. Grace
Lobbyists (in this case) didn't do anything that the average person couldn't counter. Instead of spending your evenings watching "Dancing With The Stars", try making phone calls to your friends and neighbours, get them to call as well. Lobbyists are just plain wrong, no doubt. But they have no real power when trying to convince the average Joe Citizen to vote one way or the other. Their power is in being able to connect with the politicians. They can send out as many post cards as they like, but if the people wanted to counter it, they could easily just by talking to their neighbours. The problem is that average Joe Citizen doesn't care enough to move from in front of his TV. He'd rather vote for the next American Idol than the next mayor.
Our literature came on different weeks so it means that they mailed them on different weeks to the same address, different people. We received at least three telephone calls from the "No" camp. Grace
