I agree, they could smile, if they want to.

Anyone who has met me knows that I am happy go lucky. I always smile and I give good customer service as well as go above and beyone for my bosses. That isnt the issue here.

I didnt know you were in the medical field. I may PM you with a few ?'s. I can right now because I have to be in Cary i class by 530....gotta run yall...

I will be back to debate...

I never pointed a finger. I was actually making a blanket statement. I have spent a lot of out-of-pocket money making sure kids have something to eat. I have taught for 10 years...I know how the lunch lines are. Make sure you jump on the right person.

I've been through the lunch line when the kids are there & have found the lunchroom staff to be very nice, friendly folks :) I understand why the "veggie /tray" policy is in place. I also understand why teachers are discouraged for paying for lunch shortages from their own pockets. On the day my son was given a veggie tray ... the same thing happened to other children. I don't think any of those kids should have received a veggie tray until the school was sure the database was reliable and the parents had been notified. Now that the database has been updated, I really think West View staff is doing a great job. Unfortunately, the veggie trays are not a policy that came into place because the teachers or lunchroom staff were "mean". The policy is here because in the past the teachers and cafeteria staff were "too nice". Their generosity was taken advantage of time & time again by the types of parents who wouldn't be embarrassed by having their teachers pay for their children's lunches and who think it awesome that their children are getting to eat free veggie trays daily at school.

My son went through the line as usual because he didn't know that he was out of money. They took the school lunch away. I don't know why he didn't get a veggie tray, he doesn't either. I asked him. This is his first year of middle school and I'm sure that he was embarrassed and not willing to ask more than once for another tray. Again, I'm not worried about him because it's only happened once in 7 years. I wanted to make everyone aware that some kids are not eating on a daily basis. Also, some of the lunchroom ladies are hateful. (Some of them are wonderful and nice.) I don't think that the policy is the fault of the lunchroom staff and I do understand about parents not willing to pay their bill, but I still can't stand the thought of a child going into the lunchroom day in and out without a decent meal.

Yes, one must (or at least in the past) ask for a refund at year end. Even when my mother tried to start a Kids Bank at East Clayton Elementary School when it came down to it...it was up to the parent/child to make sure they received funds due. If a child is going to stay in the same school for the next year a parent can send a letter in asking the balance to roll over for that child. I, personally, prefer a refund so that I can stay on top of it. I think it is my responsibility, as the parent. I have, for years, sent a letter stating that I did not want my daughter to be able to charge (without having funds) or getting snacks (even though she eats salads) and they have been very good about this.

I do know that one year a kid heard my daughter state her number at the cash register and he wrote it down. As a joke he thought he would use her number for a while. This was before they started the "one can only use a number once during the day" rule. I received a bill and my daughter and I discussed it. Instead of going off half cocked we decided to be detectives and I audited (as much as I could as a working mom) lunch. Found the kid using her number, he was a friend of mine's son. We worked it out and were able to help change how numbers were used. He and I still hug one another and I ask him for money for lunch...he always laughs and says I'll catch up when you have grandchildren. He knows what he did, his parents paid us back, we helped change the system and he felt like a fool (because he was caught, I am sure). All is well.

    Just my dime.

For the record- I work in a JC middle school and we give our midlle schoolers letters every week about account balances. Most of my students read it, ball it up, and throw it away. If you have a middle schooler-probably half the stuff we try to send home goes in the trash, the bottom of the book bag, or is left on the desk at school. Parents need to stress to their middle school children the importance and expectation to bring everything home. If you truly have issues about the amount of money in your child' account, simply call. As for rude cafeteria workers. Yes, I have witnessed rudeness at my school. The thing is that many of the kids are extremely rude as well, and I think the ladies get frustrated- they are humans. Middle schoolers can be extremely rude-everyone knows this- otherwise why would everyone I meet say to me that they do not know how i can teach that group- they are the worst.
To Hatteras_ You are awesome for all you do for the schools and for what you said. Anyone who spends a lot of time in the school will agree with what you said, and your attitude.

I do not think there is any other profession that is put down and complained about as much as education. No where is there so many people who think they can tell professionals what they should be doing like there is in education. In public schools we have to deal with ALL kinds of kids and parents so we can not make everyone happy and can not cater to individuals. We have to have rules and policies for ALL the students that make sense. Not allowing charging and free meals is one of those because some have taken advantage- one bad apple can spoil it for the bunch!
