What a wonderful story. My daughter and I swim with dolphins at Key Largo, Dolphins Plus. It is rated the best in the world. The first time we went we were extremely nervous but these that we swam with were so gentle and swam with us, pushed us around, laughed, etc. They are a miracle. My most favorite picture of my daughter is her kissing one of them and the sun glaring off of her hair, the dolphin and the water. Grace
You know, my second wife had a general comment about dolphins. She would say that people think dolphins are smart and friendly because you hear of them pushing swimmers, who are in trouble, to shore. The fact is, dolphins just like to push things. The problem is that you never hear from the swimmers who are in trouble and were pushed out to sea.
She did (she married me), and I'm sure she still does. But in this, she wasn't joking. Due to her job at the University, she was knowledgeable on such things.
I can tell you that when I was 16 I was out about 200 yards from shore at Atlantic beach on a boogie board. I was sitting there with a friend and all of a sudden three fins appeared!!! I pooped myself!!! Come to find out it was just dolphins. Moral of the story, go to the bathroom before you go to the beach!.
For future reference, when dolphins breach their dorsal, you can usually see a bit of their back as well. Sharks will show only the dorsal. (or is it the other way around?) Oh, yeah, one more thing. In spite of what cartoons and Steven Spielberg may show you, sharks rarely breach their dorsal before an attack. They much prefer to come in from below. So, if you see a dorsal, odds are you have nothing to worry about. However, if you don't see anything...
Well at that time I have already seen most of the JAWS movies. When I saw those fins..I freaked. So did my friend. Hell he was halfway back to the beach. I froze!
