i guess you got the wrong guy at Lowe's, when we bought our's, the guy there explained everything to us, the instructions were on the tank, and we went home and very simply hooked it up. Do a little research online if you are afraid of doing it yourself. We have saved at least 50% over what we were paying TR Lee's each year and use the fireplace just as much. One trick on saving gas is to turn it off inside each time you turn the flames down.
Kaci, thanks for the heads up! BTW, TR Lee never returned my call today. I would prefer to buy the tank and not deal with the gas co.'s, particularly, after all the horror stories I've heard. I still am not clear as to who do I call to connect the tank to the regulator. Are plumbers licensed to do this, or HVAC? Thanks for any info!
Is the pipe coming out of your house there? If it is, with a little guidance from one of our knowledgable men on here, you should have no problem hooking it up yourself. My DH did ours and he had never done it before. Like i said, luckily we got a great guy at Lowe's that took the time to explain it to him and the directions were on the side of the tank too. Where is Devilock today, he would be a good one to ask.
McCracken came out real fast and got my tank after I told them I wasnt paying the rental fee or the balance due. I knew by the percentage left in the tank that they were still going to end up refunding me after they picked it up, a whole whopping $30.... but they did come get it within 3 or 4 days.
i can understand that, TR Lee is like old time Clayton family and think everyone owes them for even lowering themselves to serve us newcomers:lol::lol::lol: (that was a joke, but just the impression i got)
I'll go you one better than that.........it's actually in my restrictive covenants that we HAVE to use TR Lee for propane. I'd like to see them try to enforce that.
We use Amerigas and have not had any problems with them. They charge a rental fee, but only if you don't use any gas for the year. We rarely use our gas logs and have not been charged rent - as long as they can squeeze some gas in there when they come.
With McCracken, if they couldn't fill it from atleast 1/2 and atleast twice a year, they charged $60 tank rental fee.
My husband was wondering about restrictions about transporting that much propane in a personal vehicle (truck). Anyone know?
OK, Everyone, stay away from TR LEE. Seems them and Ferrell Gas are the low end on the totem pole of this thread. I will try McCracken, and Amerigas..... Thanks.
I've had good experience with the McCracken office in WIlson's Mills. I own the tank, and they said that I can get gas on an on-call basis with no penalty for not using a certain amount (because I own the tank). Not sure how their tank rental works, but I have several friends who have switched to them over some of the other local companies because their terms were more reasonable.
I remember when I first moved into my house, I called all the different gas companies trying to get a tank for our gas logs. None of them had any (it was December). I didn't like that, but could understand it. I tried again a couple of months later. A few places had some tanks then. What amazed me was the lack of customer service. They didn't answer the phone, didn't return call and when you finally did get a person, they acted as if having a new customer was too much extra work for them. I don't know if they have improved any since then. I hated giving ANY company my business with such a bad attitude, but since they all had the same bad attitude, I chose the best deal out of them. At the time, that was Ferell. I haven't interacted with them too much since then, but when I have, their attitude hasn't been any better, at least at the office. The drivers were nice and polite.
Sounds just like McCracken.. anytime I had to call the office @ 40/42, the old woman in the office was just hateful. Everything she had to do was just asking too much. I should be lucky she answered the phone I guess.
We've had Amerigas for 6.5 years and have no complaints. They do charge a rental fee if you don't use one tank a year. We are on "will call" and they come the next time they are out our way ... which has always been in less than a week. We do pay more per gal. for "will call" :-( I have not compared their per gal. price lately but when I did they were comparable to all the others.
McCracken just came out Tuesday to hook us up. They do charge a 60 fee if you don't use any gas but seeing as I'm from Florida and 50 is cold to me, I'll be using gas!! The guy that came out to do the install was really nice. He showed me how to use the fireplace even though technically all he is supposed to do is hook up the tank, test it and go. My neighbor recommended them to us because he has used them for years and never had a problem so that's why we went with them. Good luck!
McCracken just filled our tank - it was $3.06 per gallon. The only issue I have with them is that we are required to be at home because of the dogs. They are not allowed to get out of the truck if there is ANY loose dog, doesn't matter if they are mean or not, and they are not. We have an underground fence, they aren't really "loose," but they do have access to the area where the tank is. Not a big deal, but that means I have to call for a fill, and really have to pay attention not to run out! That can be an issue for me.
I don't blame them for not wanting to come onto a property with dogs. The kindest dog can be territorial and go after a stranger. Can't you put your dogs in the house on delivery day?
