Does anyone use the 100 lb propane cyclinders that you can buy from Lowe's for use with their gas logs. I currently rent a larger tank just for gas logs at our home and I was wondering if it would be better to buy the 100 lb cyclinder instead just to save the $50 yearly rental fee because we don't use the gas logs that much. If anyone does use them, do you have two tanks in parallel or just one tank.
    Thanks in advance.

TR Lee in Clayton sells the 100lb tanks with the regulator and full of gas for $199. They will come to your house to fill them for the cost of the gas + $15(I think) delivery fee. Not a bad deal at all!! Their number is 553-6494

I bought a filled 100 lb tank from TR Lee a couple of months ago and had them deliver and set it up. My bill was $298. I shopped around a little and found this to be the best deal. I call them when I need more gas. No auto-fills or rental fees.

I wouldn't recommend TR Lee's. This was year's ago, but they don't tell you they charge a premium on smaller tank refills. After a big mishap with them, I now use my own 40 # tank for the gas logs. If I used them a lot, I would just buy another 40# tank and switch them around when needed. They are easy to carry somewhere for refills. Good luck to any of you who use TR Lee. I just had a horrible experience with them. Hopefully they have changed and one of the family has retired or whatever. I got my 40 # tank from the gas place on Loop Road? in Garner near Mechanical Blvd, etc.

So far I've been pleased with TR Lee's. Sorry your experience wasn't as good.

I use TR Lee now. I guess I am going to call them to see if they can pick up my larger tank that I never use alot of the gas and then replace it with one of the 100 lb tanks. With the 100lb tank is it easy to take it somewhere to get it filled by yourself? Also how do you know when you are getting low on gas?

We were at Tractor Supply yesterday. 100 lb tank was $92. 40 lb was about $60 or $65. Just FYI ....

What is propane running if you fill yourself vs. what is TR Lee charging?

I used one for several years. It was strictly used for the gas logs. One fill lasted nearly three years (but the logs were not intended for heat, just for looks)

I called and TR Lee charges $55 to fill the 100lb tanks. I called another place and they charge $53. The $15 delivery fee is well worth it IMO because you don't have to unhook the tank, load it up, drive to Clayton, unload the tank, reload the full one, drive home, unload it and hook it back up!!

One last question. If I can not put a pressure gauge on the 100 lb cylinder so that I can see when I need more propane gas, what is my best option for back-up? Do I buy two 100lb cylinders and switch them out or can I just hook up a 25lb tank until I can get more gas? I've read on the internet that the tanks can be placed in parallel so that when one runs out the other can be used to pull gas from until the one is empty is filled again. I am using the gas only for our gas grill and gas logs that we do not use all of the time. I am assuming that it will last for quite a while like a couple of years or so.

You can put a pressure gage on the 100# tank. They sell them at Agri Supply. Tell them what your doing and they'll give you the extra fittings you need. Or you can buy one of the temperature sensitive stickers that change color to show the level of gas. You stick it on the side of the tank.

The connection for the 100# is the same as the 20#. I swap them out when I need a refill on the 100#. If you live near McGees Crossroads, Davis Paint is the cheapest for refills. 1/4 mile north on Hwy 50 from McGees Crossroads, on the left after the BP Station. Just look for the big word "Guano" on the side of the building.:lol: Till 5 PM each day and 12 noon on saturday.

I had some trouble with tires the other day at BJs, I noticed folks constantly coming into the auto repair store for Propane Refills. Might be cheap if you are a member.

We got rid of the large tank due to rental fee and higher charge for not using a certain amount of gas. We went to Lowe's and bought a tank. It works great. We thought we would buy a second one if the winter looked bad.....so far that has not been a problem. We would use the logs for heat if needed. We have a truck so transportation is not an issue. We also purchased a hand truck to move the tank.

    Ooh Rah.
From the looks of the posts I am going to get rid of my large tank and get the 100 lb cylinder because I just use my gas logs for heat on very cold nights or power outage. I think that is a better option and I can avoid the rental fee. I will go to Agri-Supply this weekend or somewhere to try and see if they have the correct regulator.

If you are having TR Lee or anyone else fill your 100# tank, just ask the question if they charge more for filling a smaller tank, etc. I went from renting the 300 # to buying my own 100 # but they weren't up front and I was kind of mislead about the upcharge for filling a smaller tank. They were totally unprofessional about it afterwards. Times change though and I'm glad to hear some of you are happy with them. Best of luck to you!

40 #s tanks work fine for me since I don't use the logs as much as others. Its also easier to move when full, etc. For me, the tanks are very easy to disconnect and switch tanks as needed.

I used to have the 100 # tank hooked to both the logs and gas grill, but if you are forgetful and leave the grill on all night, $$$$$$$$. I wouldn't hook a big one to the grill for this reason.

An older woman in our neighborhood used TR Lee and after hearing how they treated her. I would never use them. They took advantage of her. She knows better now.

if you do this then you need to stick to using a microwave or buy some more insurance

I am happy using TR Lee, but I didn't know there was different charge for filling the smaller tanks. Do you remember the difference in pricing?
