Johnston County includes a large amount of unincorporated area, that is, areas outside of incorporated towns and cities. The area now referred to as Cleveland includes a community known to old-timers as "Cleveland School" as well as an area once known as "Old Drug Store," and some other areas. Another community in the area is McGees Crossroads. A lot of people think of Cleveland as the area surrounding I-40 and NC Hwy 42 (aka, 40/42, as in the name of this website), but Cleveland is much more than that, and there are some very nice subdivisions in the Cleveland area. If you live in the area, your mailing address will include the name of an incorporated city or town where the post office is located, not the name of the community as it is known to its residents. For example, my mailing address is Willow Spring, even though I live 14 miles outside of Willow Spring, in the McGees Crossroads community. Likewise, the businesses at 40/42 have Garner addresses, even though they are not in Garner, they do not pay Garner taxes, and their emergency services do not come from Garner. Mailing addresses in the Cleveland area include Smithfield, Clayton, Benson, Garner. Johnston County is a nice place to live and raise a family. The schools have a very good reputation. Come for a longer visit and check us out! Where are you moving from?
Well, Duh! I just looked at your location, and see that you're in Maine. Nothing like asking a question when the answer is right in front of me! I'm from NH, but I've lived in NC since 1984, and Johnston County since 1985, so it really feels like home to me. I think Maine is like NH in that it has very little, if any, unincorporated area. In NH, you pass from one town to the next with nothing in between, the boundaries butt up against each other, so no one lives in an unincorporated area. Here, a lot of the towns are small incorporated areas, and the parts in between are just "in the county" but not in any town. Hence the confusion of where exactly is Cleveland, for example.
Oh, I know what you are talking about. Been there myself, when we were hoping to move to the coast. OP - We're full! Stay home!!! rofl
You are right, there is a whole lot of nothing in Maine. Except Stephen King, Paul Bunyon, and his ox Blue.
You picked, probably, one of the worst apartment complexes. I would suggest the complex I live in, which is Parkside Village Apartments. As it's name suggests, it is literally adjacent to the newest park in Clayton (they're still expanding it), which is great, since you said you had a little one. It's also right around the corner (sort of) from the elementary school and next to the middle school.
