I know its a bit of a hike but to some, it might be worth it! http://www.halgo-durham.com/ Here is a portion from the original poster from the city-data forum: "They have a huge variety of frozen pierogi's, blintzes, golabki (stuffed cabbage) all are very good - like homemade. Also lots of other sausages, dairy products, canned and dry goods, teas, chocolates, and on and on. Anyway, they have it all and if they don't, they'll get it for you. They came here from Jersey and make a trip up there regularly. They didn't have fresh Polish sausage, only smoked, but they'll bring some back from Jersey if you want it." Now...I'm looking for this certain Polish cake. I think its pronounced, "Bod-va-ka" or "Bod-ka-va". Its like a chocolate cake with some sort of swirl in the center. So good. Anyone know?
I wonder if this store sells hot dogs? ============================ Two Poles emigrated to America. On their first day off the boat in New York City, they spied a hot dog vendor in the street. "Did you know they eat dogs in America?" one asked the other. "I did not know that." "Well, If we're going to live here, we might as well learn to eat like Americans." So they each bought a hot dog wrapped up in wax paper and sat down to eat them on a nearby park bench. One Pole looked inside his wax paper, then over at the other Pole and asked, "What part did you get?"
I'm thinking he doesn't mean Baklava (I've made that many times and it's layers phylo dough and nuts) I believe what you are looking for is Babka (click below) http://www.babka.com/prod_Giant_Chocolate_Babka_27_.html
good treats If you do a search for Polish recipes, tons of sites will come up. Last year I wanted to make a traditional cookie from my childhood for my cookie-share program at work. I was able to find a different spin on Crusciki (the powdered sugar cookie treat). This recipe hada truly Christmas "spirit" to them, and the cognac was great to sip on as I kneaded the dough for an hour. I was tipsy at the end, but "strong like bull." As my great-grandmother used to say. Do you know if they sell Slovenien kielbasa at this store as well? Boy, do I miss that stuff!!!
