I need an expert in the "How to Home School" your child field. I have an 11 year old grandson who lives in our home with his father. The tradional school setting is not working. We have been thru IEP's and BIP's and now he has been moved to yet another school to a BED class. This seems to be the worst solution possible and his "education" is lacking. We are considering "Home Schooling" him but have no idea where to even start. Can any one help.

First of all let me state that I do not home school, however, I do know several people that are at this time.

The daycare/stay and play place behind Food Lion at 40/42 (Up and Away Indoor Play)have several home schooler Mom's that either work there or that know each other. They also belong to home school co-op groups. If you are set on home schooling I would start there for pointers.

If you are not up to home schooling, as not everyone is cut out for that kind of thing. There is a small school that was started a few years ago that seems to have a good reputation - Lighthouse Academy. I do not have their number, but you should be able to find them listed either online or in the local phone book.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck.

    Home School

My daughter home schools and the children (3) are doing wonderfully well. They also belong to a home school coop which helps the kids socially as well as academically. If you want to speak with her, let me know and I will get both of you together.

Here's the first place that you need to start researching. It is the website for the Department of Non public Education. It has the guidelines for how to go about pulling your child out of public school, beginning your homeschool, who can homeschool, etc....

Another excellent place for information on homeschooling in NC is the NCHE website at http://nche.com/. The homepage has clickable links to find out almost everything you ever wanted to know about HS'ing in this state. Combined with the info from DNPE that rcmommy posted, you should have a very good idea about what it will take to begin homeschooling.

Although I am no expert, as we have only been HS'ing for a year, you are welcome to e-mail me if you have more questions. If I don't know the answers, I can probably direct you to someone with more experience.

    Good luck!

    Kimmie,

If you find out any answers PLEASE pm me. We have several w/ IEP's & their eductional solution at the school is not working either. We too are heavily contemplating pulling out a few of the older kids. If anyone on here knows of someone who homeschools a special needs child that has to have an IEP, please let me know. I knwo of several people who homeschool and do really well. However, I need to meet someone who homeschools a special needs child. Does not matter the disability. Need to know more so the protocol rather than the cirriculum.

    Kimmie,

It is very, very easy to pull them out and enroll them in your homeschool. Minimal paperwork. There are many programs out there and you have to find out what meets your child's need the best. Each child is so different. I wish you all the best. Maybe they'll be ansewrs on this board for both of us.

    Take care,

    Stephanie--mom to 7

I have a question, if the public school decides to fail your child for attendance, can you just yank them out and homeschool? Will they pass that year/nine weeks?

I've homeschooled for 9 years straight now. Oldest is 8th grade.

I use Switched on Schoolhouse from AOP.com (you can buy used on ebay for less). Go to the AOP site and just browse and check it out.

If you really want to homeschool him, follow the links provided above, notify the State (follow their directions given on the site), get a good curriculum and start schooling him. Don't make it a mountain and let it intimidate you. Once you get set up and started, it's really not very difficult, especially if you are using a computerized curriculum like SOS. It sets your schedule and lesson plans and dates for you, grades most lessons and papers. All you need to do is be there to help with questions your child needs help with for the most part. There are many great options out there. Join a good homeschool group too. They can be a fantastic resource for you.

    Best wishes.

If they just failed for attendance but the grades were there, I think you would have no problem doing that.

It just occurred to me on the school attendance thread. THAT would be my response. "Oh, you're going to fail him/her for attendance? See ya next year, then." lol

The problem with that is that if you decide to put your child back into public school, it is at the principal's discretion to decide what grade level your child would be placed. If he/she decides to, he/she could put him/her back a year because of the attendance issue. Or, you could just homeschool the rest of the way through (then you get to decide what grade your child should be in, not the state or a principal with a possible grudge)!
