Just wondering...should this not go in the Upper Room thread? Could have sworn you wrote that you made that thread just for these types of posts.

I don't care where it was suppose to be posted. It was meant for me.

I just made an appointment to have our beloved pet of more than 10 years put to sleep on Friday. She is like our daughter (and sister to our kids). It took me a full week just to make the phone call. I know it is the right decision. It just hurts so bad.

Thanks for posting...even if it was the wrong place. Please say a prayer for our family this Friday if you think of it.

Glad it wasn't posted in the Upper Room thread, I would have missed it if it was.

    Thanks for posting.

My first impulse was to put it in the Upper Room.

It certainly would fit right in, but I listened to young Logan several more times and just felt led to give him a little more attention with his own thread.

We are a Sheltie family. She was a 10 year old sable/tri.

They came to our home on Friday afternoon. I have always wondered how much our pets really know but she seemed to know that morning. Maybe it was the way we were carrying ourselves...who knows. It was a difficult morning. Anyway, the vet and her assistant came in and examined her. The cancer had spread everywhere so we knew we were doing the right thing. I know it is a strange thing to say, but it was a very peaceful experience. She basically went to sleep in my arms. I had my hand on her heart when she went and know that she was not in in any pain. We held her..the vet held us. She was wonderful. We let her brother (another sheltie furbaby) in once it was over so he would know she was gone. They vet says it helps them to grieve easier and she has been right so far. He came in and sniffed her then layed down beside her for a minute...then got up and moved on. The vet also made a clay print of her paw and put a little of her hair in it. It has meant a lot to all of us. My kids have done well. The youngest (9 years old) had a little meltdown on Wednesday.

    Thanks so much for asking.

Also, I have to agree with little Logan. If you are going through the same thing...or struggling with the decision...you have to know that it is the right thing to do for a pet that you love.

Mommy3 and family, I also had to have one of my pets put to sleep, and like your beloved Sheltie, mine also passed in my arms as the vet administered the serum.

I hope you'll accept this poem attributed to Kipling from my family to yours:

    A Dog for Jesus

I wish someone had given Jesus a dog.
As loyal and loving as mine.
To sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes
And adore Him for being divine.

As our Lord grew to manhood His faithful dog,
Would have followed Him all through the day.
While He preached to the crowds and made the sick well
And knelt in the garden to pray.

It is sad to remember that Christ went away.
To face death alone and apart.
With no tender dog following close behind,
    To comfort its Master's Heart.

And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn,
How happy He would have been,
As His dog kissed His hand and barked it's delight,
For The One who died for all men.

Well, the Lord has a dog now, I just sent Him mine,
The old pal so dear to me.
And I smile through my tears on this first day alone,
    Knowing they're in eternity.

Day after day, the whole day through,
    Wherever my road inclined,
Four feet said, "Wait, I'm coming with you!"
    And trotted along behind.

    Thanks Kent. That was beautiful.

I've never been sure if dogs go to Heaven, but when my son asked, my immediate reply was yes. I hope that everything good and happy in our lives will be part of what we experience in Heaven. I told him that when I think of Dixie I picture her running (she hadn't run in a long time) through Heaven's meadows with her furbrother Shadow who died in 2000. There is nothing more beautiful than a sheltie running with all that fur "flying" in the wind.
