I just witnessed a four car fender bender on 70 near Talecris. I had been behind a guy in a brand new Chrysler Crossfire ($30k-$40k sports car) for several miles. As he started off from each stop light he would slow drastically between each gear shift, and since I'm in an automatic it was very aggravating. I was thinking "What an idiot. He has a brand new sports car and has no clue how to drive it". Sure enough, his shiny new sports car is now an ugly crumpled mess because he ran into the car in front of him. I was right behind him, but of course I didn't hit him because I'm a good driver. ;)

No one was going over 55 mph at the time, reminding me yet again that its not about speed ...it's all about competence.

haha i just came by that wreck and thought the exact same thing. it was the front of the snazzy sports car that was crumpled, and i thought "haha maybe you shouldn't have been driving like an ....."

but i'm glad you saw what went down. i've always said that you shouldn't be able to own a car whose performance is superior to your driving skills...just becasue you can afford it doesn't mean you're equipped to drive it

Yeah, I think they should all be put through a time trial/obstacle course and get to at least 150 mph before they can buy those cars. Same thing happened to me the other day. I got behind a brand new Corvette that was going too slow. I fantasize about dropping into 4WD and pushing them out of the way.

One day I might snap ...you never know.

Now it is funny. Hope it wasn't one of my neighbors. More and more I see men from our neighborhood over the age of 60 buying those small sports cars and I wonder how some of them can get into the seat...but that is just something I wonder every so often while I tool around in the old Volvo.

I get rather irritated with people who shift so slow deliberately. Ride that clutch! When I had my manual, you wouldn't had to wait for me. You likely wouldn't have caught me for about a mile. :)

That light in front of Talecris is where I got rear-ended about 3-4 years ago. I stopped for the light turning yellow, but the big sedan loaded up with passengers couldn't. Across the intersection I went. Luckily the car waiting to turn left toward Clayton waited for me to roll across.

see, i'm not so sure they do it deliberately so much as they just do not know how to properly operate a manual transmission

Well ...if you've got the skills to use one its okay.

Exactly. I didn't have an automatic till I was 30. I was always much faster off the line with the stick shifts, so I have no patience for slow sports car drivers.

Crossfires aren't really that strong in terms of performance. It's more of a sporty cruiser. Now if you step up to the SRT-8 Crossfire, then you're bringing up the performance with the supercharger. He was probably either not familar with how to drive it or was short shifting, trying to save a little on gas. Problem is with a car that has little torque and that peaks at a higher RPM, short shifting doesn't really motivate the car that well.

Whatever the car ...whatever the shifting method ...if you have an auto-retractable spoiler that pops up at 60 mph (actually made me laugh) ...you should be able to get out of the way of a full size 4WD pickup truck.
