Hi, I need some new ideas and thought this smart group could come up with something I haven't. I moved my Mom in with us and she hasn't been happy until we visited the Senior Center on Diary Rd. Now she has something to look forward to and is excited about attending (there wasn't an active center where she lived and we have no family living here so hopefully she'll make friends). The problem is I will be working soon (God willing) and I need to get her to the center a couple times a week. The Johnston County Transit System will only transport 5 miles and we live 6.5 miles away. The taxi will run approx 17.00 each way so 3 times a week is 102.00 dollars (and that's without any tipping). What am I missing??? Any ideas???

Contact the Senior Center and see if any of their other clients come your way. If you can't hitch a ride you might be able to split expenses.

I've seen an advertisement in a paper for a man in Raleigh that has been doing free shuttles for elderly, handicapped and blind for over two decades. He states that donations are appreciated and that he serves Wake and surrounding counties. His name is Thomas Wayne Allen. Take it for what its worth. I think his intent is to do a good Christian service for those in need, but I do not know him personally. You asked...and his ad came to mind. His number is 919-834-7831.

Saw this on wmpm web site. Not sure if it is the same as what you referred to.

"Ride JCATS & reserve your seat. School, work, appointments, and more. JCATS is an affordable means of county wide transportation. $1 per ride in the county and $10 per ride out of the county. Call 24 hours in advance for availability. Some limitations apply. Call 919-202-5030 and ask for Crystal. "

If you attend church, you might pose the question to your pastor. Maybe an inquiry could be put in your church bulletin, or up on a bulletin board. My mom often would give rides to the elderly people in our church to get their hair done or to go shopping or whatever they needed. She didn't work outside of the home at the time so it gave her a reason to get out of the house, and made her feel like she was contributing to helping the community.

JCATS does not go to all areas, and you must contact them weekly to see if they have a route to your area. I have a handicapped son and we use
Williams Transporation 934-4565. Can be expensive, but he would have no other way to get to work. Good Luck.

Just a word of caution... he transported some of the senior participants I work with and it ended in a not-so-nice way. Without specifics, let me simply say that if something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Perhaps others have had good experiences with him, but unfortunately the stories I have heard from those who needed rides were not so favorable

I've had luck with Ride Share on Craigslist. Granted you'd have to check the people out, but if it's a regular basis something could work out.

JCATS transports folks from all over the county. I work at a adult workshop & they transport from Benson, Clayton, Angier & other places to Smithfield. Also I know that they pick up folks from all around for appointments. OF Course it could be different for Senior Citizen Centers but I could't see why.
