We just rescued a puppy from the shelter and was hoping someone out there could help us figure out what breed dogs/dogs this puppy may be. I have some pictures I just posted to help out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22294424@N07 Any help is appreciated as always, Thanks!
What a cutie! It looks almost just like my dog did as a puppy, and she is half Chow, half Australian Shepherd. Does she have any black spots on her tongue? Sure looks like she has some Chow in there somewhere.
No, no black spots on the tounge. Shelter thought it was a Lhaso, but didn;t quite look right. Thanks!
Aww very very cute. Congrats!! I would agree with the chow... chow mixes do not all have the black spots, and even pure breeds do not necessarily get spots until 3-4 months old. Head looks to big for Lhaso... good luck in your search! Can I ask which shelter? I just brought back a litter of pups I fostered and she looks familiar!!!
Way back one of our German Shepherd Dogs had that look as a tiny puppy. All fur ball and fat. Then the feet grew way-way before the legs grew. That was a funny time.
Check that tongue for spots - that is the Chow Chow giveaway sign (genetic marker). You might have a BIG new dog child! Woof Woof says hello - He has been on 24-7 high alert w/ all the construction guys at the house - needless to say we have had no theft issues. He ROCKS!
The paws look a bit small for a Chow. Would like to see the whole puppy body. Cute face on that little bugger. What they look like when they are young and what they become when they grow up are very different sometimes. If you saw my dog Quincy from when he was 15 weeks old and you compared it to him now, you'd never think he was the same dog. Can you let us see the rest of the pup's body? Black spots show up on lots of tongues - I know a poodle and a yorkie with black spots on their tongues and no chow in them at all - I've met their parents. There are about a dozen breeds where black spots show up fairly frequently - Dobermans, cockers, goldens. . .they are like freckles on people. However, I've heard chow pups are born with pink tongues and they turn at about 3 months of age.
Personally, I'm not seeing Chow in this pup, at least from a facial standpoint. Here are a few Chow Puppy pictures:
The thing is, you really can't label a dog down to two different breeds. Dogs can be several mixes, that's the thing. Who knows, the dog's dad could have been a "jump-the-fence" breed.
Yes kdc - I see shepherd too - looks like a bit of a mask on the face. I'd love to see it's profile standing up. So often, multi-colored dogs fur tends to lighten as they age (what's not black) so I think this pup will do as well. I'd love to see him/her (name yet?) a year from now. Here's Q at 16 weeks and at adult The texture/length/and color of his coat changed quite drastically and he grew hair on his ears.
Very true - but trying to detect one's ancestry can be fun - human or critter There is actually a DNA test for dogs (read it on here, I think) where they can detect 40 or so breeds. . .how interesting is that?
Zoo, What kinds of dogs do you think yours is a mix of?? My inlaws have one that looks similar to yours, kinda of a Benji look, but she's darker, she probably weighs about 35 pounds. That is the BEST dog I've ever been around. I know you can't duplicate personalities, but she is so darned cute, I want to kidnap her!
Q isn't in full coat in the latter photo - his fur will grow and has to a length of about 7" before I gave up and had him cut down. He goes 55lbs. Some 'dog people' have suggested a bit of Briard as his back parts and he definitely herds out of instinct. Others have suggested some Bearded Collie (who also herd). My Dad swore he saw Airdale in Q when he was a pup - very LONG legs 'Stilts' was his nick name and still is one of them  From a profile I see a lot of Afghan. The shelter had him labeled "Briard Mix" when he was confiscated by Animal Control for abuse. To me, he's my mutt - I love mutts - so unique. In the thread in this section - I think it's titled 'who's your dog?' or something similar - I have photos of the gang - One, Jimmy, looks just like a 45 bl Benji. http://www.4042.com/4042forums/showthread.php?t=14274&highlight=Percy
Hmmm, forgot about the bearded collies. I will have to post a pic of Trixie when I get home. I keep threatening to steal her. I love mutts too, they have the best personalities.
