I was wondering what the options are for getting rid of our christmas tree? Is there somewhere you take it? Is there a group that will pick it up? Or what?

    Thanks!

are you in a municipality or out in the county? the answer to that should be the first thing you google.

    personal suggestions:

    burn it

chunk it into a pond. they make great bass hatcheries

the city of raleigh has dropoffs (i say raleigh because i grew up there and this is how they were doing things when i left 9 years ago) and pickups and such, but the good part is that they grind them up and use them for city park playground padding and trail linings and stuff. i'd bet other local towns are doing something similar these days, so even if you don't live in town, maybe you could haul it to a dropoff point if you know that where it's going is to the benefit of the community...

I put mine back in the box I bought it in and put it up in the garage.

Clayton city limits. No pond near by and don't think they would let me chuck it in the community pool!

Take the tree off the stand and fold the limbs upward. Then put the base in the box and the tree in the box and lug the box upstairs. We have a fiber optic tree, so no lights to have to take down...just a few ornaments. We did real trees for a number of years and I don't miss it.

I believe we have burning restrictions right now so I would not burn the tree. Not sure if we have any Russian groups in the area but they will normally come and get a tree since it is now their holiday. We use artificial but if you have a place in your yard or a neighbor does that you could place the tree it makes for a great habitat for nature. My neighbor puts theirs in our common natural area each year we have some of the greatest creatures around.

I will ask around and get back to you...how about a landscaper? Maybe they can use the tree for something. Just a thought.

just did a little research. you can burn it if you want to as long as it's within 100 feet of your house.

    http://www.lelandtribune.com/lifestyle.asp?dismode=article&artid=534

By North Carolina law (G.S. 113-60.25 and 113.60.27), the ban prohibits all open burning statewide, regardless of whether a permit was issued. In addition to a $100 fine, people in violation of the open burning ban may have to pay court costs.

The following are a few facts about the law regarding the ban on open burning:
ยท The ban does not apply to a fire within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. County fire marshals have jurisdiction of burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. A campsite (for example a tent, recreational vehicle, pop-up trailer, etc.) is _not_ considered an occupied dwelling. The Division of Forest Resources has advised county fire marshals across the state of the burning ban and asked for their consideration of also implementing a ban on open burning.

Mr. Chestnutt said it is not illegal in Johnston County to burn within 100 feet of a residence, but if anyone does burn this close to a home they run the risk of damaging their property

    DB,

Thanks on the clarification on burning. I was under the impression it pertained to all outside burning.

i mean, i'd still be careful if i were you...you know, hose, rake, shovel, not windy, etc.

even without any restrictions, the idiot who lives next door to me nearly burnt down my house a couple of years ago by burning a pile of branches in his back yard....he did it in the middle of the day, a windy day, at a fairly dry time....AND DIDN'T EVEN OWN A GARDEN HOSE. we found out that nearly a half acre of our yard was burning by having him beat on the side of our house while trying to connect OUR hose. idiot.

best time to burn is just about dusk. it's the time of day when the wind is most settled. learned that from an old farmer man

Thank you for the ideas but we live on a small lot that is not conducive to burning. Is there somewhere I can take it? A place that composts or something?

OMG, was this off of Cornwallis a few years ago? If so I remember.

I used to laugh at DH, we burn quite frequently (leaves, trees, etc) and he would just about soak it all down (esp leaves) and the surrounding parameter, have BOTH hoses going from either side of the house. He was like Quick Draw McGraw. It would burn though, nice and slow - controlled. You do NOT want to mess with your dried up Christmas tree or leaves if you are ignorant to safe burning.

Yeah, somebody did that in my neighborhood.... Except nobody picks them up here, I wonder when the neighbors will figure it out. It's only been four or five days.
