I have never really been one to play a lot of video games...
but I was at a friend's last night and got hooked on the new PS3 Rock Band game. So now I am obsessed with buying a game system, but don't want to shell out $400 or more without knowing how much I might really use it.
My questions for you gamers, if you would be so kind to help:
    1. Is it crazy to spend $ for a used system (knowing that it may die tomorrow and I'm out that money)?
    2. If it's not crazy to get a used system, is there a place more reputable than others to purchase said system?
    3. How long will I suffer from the withdrawals of Rock Band if I decide to not buy my own system?

    Thanks in advance,
    ssmm

Sorry, can't help with choosing a system, but I can highly recommend Guitar Hero III if you like music games. My kids, nephews, etc. love it. And you can get a PC version if you don't want to buy a new system. Don't know yet how well the PC version works because I won't let the offspring use his until his birthday, but I'll let you know ASAP. I got it at Best Buy, about $80.

My son (7) begged Santa for Guitar Hero. We had (notice, I said had) no video system at all.

I went to Game Stop at White Oak, and they were very nice and knowledgeable there. I told them I didn't want to spend too much $, so they recommended a PS-2 and Guitar Hero II. While I kept our kids in another store, DH went into Game Stop and bought the system. It was very affordable, and my son loves it.

On 12/23, I was in Wal-Mart in Clayton, and noticed some commotion in the electronics area. They had gotten in some Wii's, so I bought one. We love that. That's the one we play with family stuff. The PS-2 is in the toy room for the kids to play their games on.

So, back to your question, Game Stop is a great place to go for information.

Ok heres the deal... PS3's suck. Don't buy them, they are made by SONY. if you are willing to shell out money then buy a 360. If they mess up. You can send them back to Microsoft, and they will fix or replace it no cost. XBOX 360 also runs, Guitar Hero 1,2,&3, Rock Band, and whatever else you need. It is almost like a modem for a computer. It has a huge memory and is good for movies and music.

Well, I'm not a serious enough gamer to shell out $350-$400 bucks for a XBOX or PS3. I will say that I've had my PS2 for about four years and never had any problems with it. I also bought a fairly cheap extended warranty for the first two years through Best Buy where I bought it. Unless you've got to have the absolute highest resolution games, I'd say get a PS2. Tons and tons and tons of PS2 games (new & used) out there that will be on the market for some time to come.

you can pick up a used xbox 360 at Gamestop, they're very reputable. i don't know about their refurbished systems, but i know that with the used guitar hero controllers if you have the receipt and you didn't smash it over someones truck (i.e. obvious physical destruction) they'll replace it for free. The wii is also a good option and as we get further away from xmas they'll become more readily available retail. wii doesn't have rock band though =( just guitar hero 3.. but all of the games on wii are just about as approachable and fun as the guitar heroes. Also keep in mind, rockband is about a $250 game in its self, if you buy the full package.

I haven't seen enough of a draw for ps3 yet. Most of the games they have are either directly available on xbox 360, or theres a replacement available on xbox 360 (I.E. Resistance: Fall of Man, a first person shooter about killing aliens -> Halo 3; GT5 -> Forza 2). They really need to show me something exciting that i haven't seen before to get me interested in a 500 dollar box.

That is what my parents got for my daughter and neice to have at their house. I don't have anything here at my house. My brother told my dad that the 360 was the best one to have, but I have found that the games are not kid friendly for a 7 yr old. Even though my daughter does ok with the games, I have found that the Wii is more kid has more kid friendly games. So now that their house is more popular then home is, I want to save up for a Wii. lol..of course I have fallen in love with the DDR (dance pad). My neice also got the Guitar thing and she has gotten very good on it, but I have found that too is to hard for a 7 yr old to play. Heck it's hard for me and my neice to play.

I almost stopped in there the other day, but didn't want to with my daughter. Does anyone know when you say used, about what kind of price rang do they sell the used 360's?

My two cents, I have two 11 year old boys who love GameStop and we also love Play-n-Trade, located back by the Theatre at White Oak.

They have all the games and gaming systems (new and used) too. The difference at Play-n-Trade is you can play anything in the store before you buy it. They have tv's everywhere and every game system hooked up so you can see the game, play the game, feel the controller's, etc. It's great to go in there as a parent and get the hard questions answered too, about why a game is rated what it's rated and language etc. We happen to be in there the other day when the Wii's came in and Halo 3, my kids were pretty happy about obtaining a copy of Halo 3. (after I asked a gazillion questions)

With all that being said, if you are going to buy a system I would recommend (with 11 year old input) the XBOX 360. We are all saving our change for a Wii...I am so hooked on the bowling.

Just to let you know (only because I happened to read it this morning)...

Rock Band is not available for the Wii, and the company (EA) says they probably won't make it available in the near future.

That having been said, I like my Wii. I picked it up last night (Game Stop rain check) and stayed up too late last night bowling. It was a bit of a workout, trust me. :)

wow... thanks to you all for your (mostly) helpful and (mostly) unbiased information!!

I might check out GameStop and see what they have. I do not want to drop $200-300 on a system right now, and am definitely not going to buy the whole guitar hero package because: #1, it's way too much for my budget right now and #2, I would have to clear out one of the spare bedrooms to have a place to set it up, which wouldn't be too much fun.
So... that being said, I will have to say that I am leaning toward a PS2 right now... or maybe a Wii...lol.

Anyone who just got an upgraded system looking to sell your PS2 at a fair price?!?!?!?!?

    Happy gaming,

So can anyone tell me... is there any major difference in the PS2 Redesign and the PS2 Silver? They are the same price at GameStop... and if I can get my nerve up I am going this afternoon to buy one!!

They are at White Oak, back there with the Theatre. Beside Diva Nails and Kaze Japanese Steak House.

We actually go to both places, GameStop and Play N Trade, and I prefer the Play n Trade, so do the kids.

Did you see my earlier post on thsi thread regarding their 'perks'?
