My wife and I have been talking about going somewhere snow tubing in January or February. Does anyone have any suggestions about any places in the NC mountains or possibly Virginia (not too far from home). We have never been and we are looking at just a weekend trip kind of thing. I have a 5 year old so family friendly is key. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I've never been, but my sister has been here a few times and keeps asking us to come up. http://www.snowshoemtn.com/todo/win-activities/snowtubing/index.htm
I would suggest Winterplace http://www.winterplace.com/ in southern WV on the Virginia border. It is very easy to get to, right off of the interstate, and is totally geared toward families. It is probably a 3-4hr. ride from here. They also have good bang for your buck pricing on the tubing. Snowshoe is very pretty and unlike most other resorts because it is located on TOP of the mtn...but that can also make it a treacherous trip for southern flatlanders in the middle of Jan/Feb. It is also not so much geared for families with young children, it is quite the party haven, although they do offer daycare and lessons for little ones, I would say the mtn is geared more for the intermediate to advanced skiier/snowboarder, as well as young couples, or families with older children. It is probably a 6 hr trip from here in decent weather.
I lived in the Boone area for 7 years and learned to ski while I was there. I liked to go to Sugar Mountain and Beech Mt., mostly because they charged only $10 for a lift ticket on Sunday nights, for locals that is. I liked Sugar the best because they have a long green (easy) slope that I like alot, and they also have some serious vertical drops if you're in the mood for the adrenaline rush. They are both in Banner Elk. Go to Boone, turn left on NC 105. I wasn't thrilled with Appalachian Ski Mt. Runs are short, lift lines are very long: not a good combination. They do have a good ski school if you're just learning, though. I have also been to Wintergreen. Nice place. Long runs, and lots of them. It takes a lot longer to get there. The places around Boone are the closest. Snuff
For just a weekend trip and being our first time snow tubing we may try Boone because it is closer. Any ideas on where to stay or who to snow tube with?
