Renewing your License Tag

I was in Smithfield License Tag agency this afternoon just for about 15 minutes. In that short time, at least 4 different customers were told they would have to bring a paper stating that they had paid their taxes on car. Some people think they can bluff their way through but computers have made it too difficult for some folks. If you haven't gotten renewal notice for your vehicle, it MIGHT be that you have not paid your taxes on this vehicle. If you do not pay by a certain time, county tax office will put a block on you buying new tags. Counties need these tax monies and other county fees to pay for fireman, policeman, tax agency reps, all those folks we need at courthouses & county offices. I do not work for county but I do know that 99% of these fees are essential to help keep things running more smoothly. Now I will step off the soapbox and play spider solitaire some more.

That's just ridiculous. I love watching people get busted trying to lie. How many tried to renew their tags without passing their emissions test? That's a nice hefty fine, and if you don't get your renewal in the mail - it's cuz you have not had your car inspected.... Dee dee deeeeeeeee. :)

My neighbor moved here 1.5 years ago and still has not registered her vehicle ... thus is not paying taxes to support those services she uses. I believe her tags from the prior state expired the month she moved here. Guess there is no real enforcement.

I doubt that most feel that they will "get by with it", but rather just procrastinate paying their vehicle taxes for one reason or another. Besides that, if they even open their mail at all, they'll notice that they have to pay interest after a certain date until paid in full.

We have not been in a State License Office in tears. Just renew our tags online at: www.ncdot.org/dmv/

In car pool line (at a local school) I have noticed 2 or 3 cars that have out of state plates since Aug. I keep wondering how long it takes to drive from OHIO or NY to school 2x every day.... riiiiightttt.

Sometimes it just slips your mind. We have one vehicle that almost never gets driven and it's past it's inspection right now. I have GOT to get in done Monday. With the holidays, me being sick, DH working 60 hours a week, it just hasn't gotten done. Somebody sue me.

You could also notify the Dept. of Motor Vehicles where the vehicle appears to be registered in. That would be falsifying (sp) records and I'm sure they would send an appropriate letter or paperwork notifying them of their state laws regarding vehicle registrations.

Sometimes people can have dual residences and have the vehicle registered in one state and live temporarily in another with any type of street address. In such a situation, there's really nothing anybody can do if they have two different legitimate addresses. You can't always make the assumption that just because someone has out of state plates that they don't have an address in another state.

In such a case, there would be an assumed expectation that the registration would be kept current in one of the states.

One would think those offices would have interest in people violating state regulations which I believe says you must register your vehicle within 30 days of moving into the state. A few informal inquires and I learned DMV and law enforcement will only do something if a person is pulled over and tags are expired. I'm not sure what they would do... maybe a ticket.

For example, military personnel... But is it ethical for Joe Yankee to reside in NC for a year or more with expired tags - even if they have another address out of state? Makes me wonder if they are insured.

And Kdc... oooh shame on you!!!

I lived in Los Angeles for two and a half years but kept my car registration, driver license and insurance in NC. It was way cheaper. It can absolutely be done.

Can be done and yet not legal...unless you are military.

so if my children decide to go out of state to college, unless their car is registered in that state, they are being 'illegal'. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that isn't the case.

No, it's the state of residence. As long as your kids are listed at the college as "out-of-state", they will be fine.

On the other hand, if they buy a house in that state, they are no longer "out-of-state" and are required, by law, to register their vehicle in that state.

and that the part most don't know, I didn't buy a house, only rented an apartment and that's how it worked for me.
