It was a general questions to 'anybody', not directed to an individual person.
I thought it was funny, sorry! Carry on - 8)

I do so aplogize for "getting on your nerves" with using "grant it" . I will try to make sure that I use the correct wording the next time. Thank you so much for pointing that out to me.

    The computer is NOT enough....

Good Luck with that, Grace! Your daughter's beliefs about the computer and the spell check are just reflections of how our current educational system looks at penmanship. I'm with you 100%--I really like the "Loops and Other Groups" for cursive practice--it uses a clock-face to reference where to start and stop the letters, and groups letters with similar strokes together to make "getting it" easier. Not sure if they have it at Teacher's store, but you can maybe google it?? (I just don't want either of you dead, so anyway I can help..... :)

Know that I am not usually a curt, I guess that would be the right word, person. Things just get to me a little easier right now. Maybe no excuse, but they do.

I think it is necessary to know both and be PROFICIENT in both, and THEN you can decide which to use. The main reason is that for the most part, if the kids aren't taught cursive so that they really KNOW IT, then they have a HARD TIME READING IT. Now, there are always going to be those students who will figure it out, but in my own experience, most cannot read the cursive, because they are not familiar with it.

Additionally, most adults (who know both printing and cursive) tend to use a combination of both styles of writing at the same time---that's because some strokes are quicker to write in print, and some are easier and quicker in cursive--which makes the overall process of writing quicker. No real point with that, just an FYI :)

Whenever you have to fill out forms, they say, "PLEASE PRINT", so you are absolutely correct that printing is important, so I am not disagreeing with that at all, but for me, and for my children, THEY WILL KNOW BOTH!!

    Same in Wake County

Sorry to tell you, but it's the same in Wake County...

Didn't read through the entire thread, but I can tell you this.

My daughter is a 6th grader and likes to print everything. Her teacher pulled her aside and said she would not accept anymore work not written in cursive.

So they are teaching it, and they are using it, at least at her school.

Thank you! I didn't understand what some of the other posters were talking about. Both of my girls, one in 8th and one in 5th write in cursive, punctuate, and do their math without calculators, so I'm not sure what school they are attending? I do know that calculators are not suppose to be used in the 5th grade and that the 8th can use them during some testing, because of time constraints.

mine are in 5th grade and are allowed to use calculators for some stuff, provided by the school too. MOST has to be on paper w/ work shown, but some stuff they use calculators.

Oh, and they are learning cursive too.

Don't worry about it. Those of us on here understand what you are going through and know that we will bend with the wind.

My daughter isn't allowed to use one at all for homework. She has been allowed to use them I think once, at school, because of time constraints. She always has to show her work.

Yep, same here, can't use them on Homework and in class, just certain times. I am pretty sure they could use one last year on one part of the EOG's. I am just glad they are (so far) making it through 'the system' without too much drama.

knock on wood, middle school is next and I HAIN'T ready!!:ack:

No, my daughter and I will not kill each other this time, but who knows when she becomes a senior and has a "senior project". Cannot stand that they can use calculators for math when they should know the basics. When it comes to the more complicated problems, sure go ahead. By the time my daughter leaves our house believe me she will be writing in cursive. It's something she should and will know. Same thing with basic math.

Now, someone had a Thread recently where one could go out and click on cities of countries around the world and when my daughter and I sat down she actually knew some of the continents better than me. I was surprised. She told what some of you probably want to say sometimes...you think you are the only one who knows these things, I do have a brain.

    Ladies,

Hatt6 and his wife have and still do work in our school system. They are to be commended. When he states that teachers have an option to get paid either way...over 10 months or 12 months....he knows what he says. When he says that some of the time off is unpaid...he knows what he says.

Now, if he says he's voting for McCain...he's dead!

Girl, I know...I'm thankful for that myself! I hope she continues those A's through Middle School and I hope my 8th grader continues her good grades through HS. Well, they have to or learn to exist in their rooms...LOL

No doubt about that....the existing in their rooms....mine are such smart mouths, they already spend alot of time. And I think I will make them write their punishment sentences in cursive from now on....the punishment sentences...that will help with their cursive as much as it has their printing....they will hate me, but I think I will do it anyway.:twisted:
