A few quotes from the link:

“You will walk out of our office with a temporary driving permit, good for 20 days,” said Wayne Hurder, of the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

DMV officials said the extra wait time allows for more sophisticated background checks.

If you pass all DMV tests, a license will be mailed to your permanent address within 20 days.

I really don't mind if it will help catch some criminals. 8)

So, let me understand this. It will take less time to get background check for a handgun than for a license?

And for those of us whose names probably have never been in the NIC wants and warrants will still have to wait this time frame?

And which ne'er do wells does the DMV believe will apply for a driver's license, and lead to the arrest and apprehension of a really stupid criminal?

More crap thrown at us law abiding citizens, in the guise of NATIONAL SECURITY.

Folks, we don't have security. We have the ILLUSION of security. And, at some point, we need to remind the political masters that their BS has been found out.

I am bothered by that, too.

For example... I have to wait in the pharmacy line and show my ID to get some children's sudafed because a small population of people use it to make illegal drugs. HUH? And if I forgetfully leave my id in the car, my child either doesn't get the med or I have to hike back out to the car in order to get the id...because a small handful of people choose to break the law.

What a complete invasion of privacy. The state not only wants your physical address; now they are trying to require it to mail it to you. Then, they'll sell your record to anyone with $15 bucks. Thanks for that increased security! <sarcasm>

I think I'm moving to South Carolina.

One more impediment in a future voter ID act?

One more reason to get a second or third identity.

What I am worried about is what if someone steals my mail and my license was in the mail box that day. We won't be able to protect ourselves from that.

Especially now "criminals" will know that everyone's driver's license will come in the mail. So all they have to do is randomly hit mail boxes and they will possibly have our driver's license.

    That is my biggest concern.

Actually it will prbably be longer. If NCIC comes back clean, they will have to run a few more checks just to make sure the NCIC wasn't a fluke.

A post office box will not be accepted as a permanent address.
So what happens if you live in Kenly or Princeton, where they don't deliver to homes, you have to go to the post office?

That IS a big concern, bad enough people steal credit cards - that'll get you in trouble if you want to buy a car. But, if somebody jacks up your driving record - you will not even be able to DRIVE that car.

    Sounds like a job for....

    Superfred...

So, Mr. Smtih, if you want to make some positive press, perhaps this is a good way to demonstrate that, based on this small sampling of web posts, that the DMV is going down the wrong path.

And, I'm fairly sure that the federal elections of next November will seriously amend, if not dispose of, and overriding federal influence in purely state's roles...NCLB, Voter ID, reproductive choice..etc.

DMV? You should see the administration. Good Ol Boy network. Making decisions with no scientific method. Just FEELINGS. Someone hold me.

Just look at their methods for renewing plates and inspections. Could a process be any more convoluted or antagonistic? There are separate steps, methods, dates, and penalties for proof of insurance, vehicle taxes, inspections, plate renewal, and drivers licenses. You are most likely dealing with at least one of these issues at any given point in the year.

    Government bureaucracy at its finest.

Not sure if I'm channeling Pirate or Stone cold, but we are the sheep here...
    Baaaa.

When we will be tired of the crap they serve us?

Exactly. That's why I am scared to get my license delivered in the mail. Plus there is a lot of personal information on the license so they could steal your identity too if they gathered other info as well.

I wonder if there's an option where you can return to the DMV office and pick it up in person.
    Seems like a reasonable thing.
