We saved a lab from a kill shelter yesterday down in Robeson County. We pick the dog up next week from the vet after it gets shots, check up, and neutered. We don't crate our other lab and don't plan to crate this one, but thought a crate might good during the acclimation period.

Does anybody have a loaner or used one for sale? Thanks so much.

le,

I'm replying for mordorboy. The vet said he is 78 pounds but is very thin right now (the shelter had 60 listed on his sheet). Will he fit? Thanks so much!

Might be close. The biggest pup we ever crated in it was appr. 65 lbs. Will take a snapshot of it shortly, can you pm me an email address?

You may just have to call around to find a vet to give you a discount on the heartworm treatment. I would start with Old Stage Animal Hospital, 639-3337.

LJK,

That would be great if you have one we could borrow. It seems we might need it for longer than we expected. He is heartworm positive. We need to make a decision about which treatment he will have. The arsenic process requires they stay calm for a few weeks. I think a kennel will help with that. I've looked on Craig's List, but since we don't want a kennel long term, I hate to buy one considering the expense of the treatment.

I'll PM you with my contact information. Thanks.

Well, I picked up Sirius from the vet yesterday (4 hours roundtrip). They were nice but it would have been better to meet him. I was reading through the bill on my way home and saw he had tested positive for hookworms and they had dewormed him. So I called to see if it would bother our other dog or the children. Then I called our vet to schedule to have his stiches removed and asked about the worms again. She stated something different than the first vet's office. Anyway, guess it's a learning process.

He rode perfectly in the crate (thanks again ljk). But I was definitely glad we borrowed it. The vet tech had the worst time putting him in it - which we do too. I put a soft comforter in there but like all of us he prefers to be free. The vets office told me I wouldn't be able to put the collar on him I brought but when we got home and I let him out he let me slip it right on him. Guess maybe he was afraid at the vets and was a handful.

Anyway, we've had a few growls and a ugly tussle or two as Molly is trying to let him know she's in charge. We did have a 2 a.m. bathroom break but he hasn't messed in the crate. He has peed twice in the house (on furniture!) but otherwise has been good about doing his business outside. I'm sure he thinks were strange watching him go potty but the vet said to clean it up immediately and bleach the area too (our grass is dead anyway). He's trying very hard to please but is going to be a bad counter surfer which we are trying to break now. He does like to play ball though he likes to put both his and Molly's in his mouth which doesn't go over very well.

Thanks so much to everyone here who has been so helpful and encouraging. It really helps as we get through this transition. I'm going to try and get his heartworm treatment set up for after he gets his stitches out.

Thanks again!

Yep, that's him. His time was past up so if we didn't take him then he'd have probably been put down Monday a.m. instead of being neutered at that time...

OMG Look at that big head!
That's a good thing for a lab.

When we got Hunter (no longer with us) we took him to pets mart and someone said he had a big head - I seriously thought DH was gonna beat the crap out of this person - it was a good thing though

Yeah, his head is huge but his poor body is so thin it looks painful. You can see all his ribs down to the cage and every hip bone. He gobbles his food like it's the last chance to eat. I have been giving him a huge cup every few hours so he doesn't bloat or get sick. Hopefully he'll start filling out and then we can free feed like we do with Molly. She's not sure why we keep putting her food back on top of the fridge when she stops eating but still has plenty left.
