OMG...I am so sick to my stomach and have a major headache. I am glad my daughter doesn't seem to be affected. I do have all the windows opened.

I usually do it by hand until I realized that it does it self. It had a timer on it and everthing ( I am renting) It was only on for maybe 3 minutes and I had to shut the darn thing off. Is it suppose to smell of ....can't think of name at the moment.

I've yet to see an oven that really does clean itself

Did you spray something in the oven beforehand?

Self Cleaning ovens contain teflon and when you use the cleaning setting it releases a toxic gas.

Yep mine smells when I do it, but not enough to make me sick or anything, and I am sensitive to that sort of thing. Gas stove or elec?

I have had a reaction to self cleaning ovens for as far back as I can remember. Always thought it was an allergy.

Since I never had done this before.....I didn't put anything in it.

I am feeling a lil better now and the house doesn't smell like gas anymore...whhheeww. I am just going to stick with doing it by hand. It was horrible.

    I am such a dunce :(

Self cleaning ovens are for a nice spring day when all the windows are open and you are enjoying being outside ;)

Since I have never used it before, I should have come on here and asked before I did it. Luckly my youngest is with her grandparents and I was worried my oldest was going to get sick.

So if I were to do this again and when the girls and I are outside, I don't have to put anything in the oven when I do the self cleaning....right

I think that they ALWAYS stink too when it is on sel celaning mode! I can rarely use it that way because of the smell! The next time you cook in it then you will probably have an odor again.... So I would not be making toast in it anytime soon unless you wipe it down a lot with warm soapy water! :)

Correct. Spraying something in there could cause a fire or other. The oven heats up to +/- 500 degrees and when it is hot it will not let you unlock the door so if a fire starts you can only watch it and clean the mess later.

Hey, I learned the same way except it was about 20 degrees.

No, absolutely do not put anything in there to clean it. In order to "clean" itself, it is just super heating and burning off everything in there. You will have a little pile of ash in the bottom when you are done. I always forget to take the danged bulb out and it gets ruined.

I just cleaned mine yesterday. Yep it does have a strong smell. I usually just cut the fan on and let it roll. The high heat does bother me though...I'm always afraid it will catch on fire. So far, so good..it's been 10 years and no fire but it still smells bad every time.

I realized when I shut it off before it was done....its stayed locked until it cooled off a bit.

Maybe I will just stick to cleaning by hand :)

I don't think you are supposed to use oven cleaners on self-cleaning ovens, it damages the finsih I think. Do you still have your manual? If not, you can probably find one online.

I wonder if there's residue from the stuff you used to clean it by hand, and that's what smells so bad? Self-cleaning ovens do smell bad when they're cleaning, but oven cleaner on the walls would probably make it smell even worse. You might want to try it again on a day when you can open the windows, and get outside for a while! ;)

No, I am renting this house and there is no manual around that I could see. I just hate cleaning oven period.

Try putting a bowl of ammonia in the cool oven overnight. You can wipe away lots of gunk the next morning and you really do not smell the ammonia once it is in the oven!

I always set mine to clean overnight, and crack the window in the kitchen - that way I don't usually have to smell it. Just wipe it out in the morning. It does have a smell, but I think its from all the stuff its burning off (in my case).
