I thought that when the Chamber took it to the Postal Service, the Postal Service did not approve it.

It does sound inviting. I think one of the other choices was Cleveland Hills. Most of the area around here is flat. Although, if you come to my street you'd think otherwise.

This area has ALWAYS been known as Cleveland School. Go for a drive and when you come to intersections look at the signs.....all of them within a 15 mile radius says, "Cleveland School x miles"........ if ever this area is incorporated, it should be called Cleveland School. Boring, not glamorous, etc etc...all of that doesn't matter. What matters is generation after generation, those way before us....called this place Cleveland School and there is no reason to invent another name when one is already in use, official or not.

well from what i have heard from the oldtimers, it has also always been known as Old Drug Store, so that kinda mutes the above argument - our poor area has never had a real name:lol:

Personally, i would not want it named Cleveland School either, i don't know it just brings to mind a special needs community (whereas there is nothing wrong with a special needs community but that is not exactly what we are)- i guess cause when i grew up there was a special needs center nearby our town and everyone just called the area by the school's name, so i guess that is just my personal little thing

no matter what you name it, it'll always be referred to as the 'Cleveland School Area'.

Thanks for clarifying Mafiaman:) But what gets frustrating is that yeah, the folks that have been raised here know it as Cleveland School but go 20 minutes up the road and no one has any idea what you are talking about - it has to be described as you know, where 40 and 42 cross and they shake their head, then you say well you know Exit 312 off 40 and they shake their head, then you go into well kinda like smack in the middle between Garner, Clayton, and Smithfield and finally get some type of acknowledgment. The majority of my clients are originally from the Raleigh area and retired and i have yet to have any one of them know where i am talking about when they ask where i live.:banghead: BTW, love ya too sweetie:)

But unfortunately, whatever the name may be, we'll still have to explain where it is  Most people when I say 'exit 312, going towards Wilmington, where Lowes and CB are'.... they know what I'm talking about:mrgreen:
Maybe we should call it Cracker Barrel

I thought I remebered reading that after Cleveland Springs had won the vote, that someone knew of a small community in the mountains of NC that was called Cleveland Springs. Anyone else recall that??

Dug around in the 4042.com attic full of archives and pulled up this link, which explains what was done in the past if you want some background on the issue:

    http://4042.com/back_issues/Cleveland_Name_Vote/body_cleveland_name_vote.html
(The links for Background Story 1 - 7 provide the history of what transpired.)

The final results of the "alternate name place" was that an ANP is granted by the Post Office to *only* one zip code. So, an alternate name place really doesn't do anything to unite the area under a single name, since the zip code changes depending on which side of the 40/42 intersection you are on. Once this was discovered, the whole idea was dropped.

Back when this was all going on, the idea for an ANP was to pave the way for the possibility of a Post Office for this area. The broader issues of community identification and possibility of annexation still exist today.

It is neither country or rural around the 40-42 area anymore. Too much building and too many cars. If you can't stand in your backyard and pee or shoot a gun it is not country so they should give you an address depending on which side of 40 you live on. One side can be Clayton and the other side can be Garner.
