Well, thanks so much. She is extremely proud of herself as all of the swimmers should be. She has had so many health problems in the last year, it is great to see her accomplish something in the sport she loves.

All of the kids were wonderful. Let me brag for one moment. It is one thing to see players of a sport go down a line shaking hands but to see swimmers swim over to another lane to congratulate a swimmer from another team that they don't know is awesome. That is what it is all about.

gcoats...next time please introduce yourself. I would love to meet you.

    KDs,

Thanks so much. I will certainly pass along all of this to her but since she knows you I will tell her for you.

    gcoats3,

I showed this Thread to my daughter and she was all aglow. Thank you so much for letting everyone know about both CHS, WJHS and my daughter. This is what it is all about for our kids.

They are a great group of kids (excuse me, young people) who work very hard. This is a big accomplishment and they have a right to be proud. I am certainly impressed.

I don't think most people understand how exciting all of this is right now. We have several young people in our county who are in the qualifying for the summer Olympics. This has not received much press in our area and it should. They work very hard. We not only have several in our county but Wake does also. All media in our area should be boosting these young people up as this is way big.

After two consecutive years of watching Southeast Raleigh celebrate a Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference swimming championship, Clayton’s girls laid claim to the crown Friday night in the Pullen Pool.
Paced by Lauren Zsoldos, the Comets splashed their way to six first-place finishes and four runner-up efforts in amassing 504 points to dethrone the Bulldogs. The defending league champs barely made a ripple in the water, finishing seventh in the team standings with 165 points.
West Johnston claimed runner-up honors in a tight four-way race as Sarah Henry picked up a pair of individual victories to lead the Wildcats’ efforts.
West totaled 295 points, followed by Holly Springs (289), Garner (277) and East Wake (264), respectively. Smithfield-Selma finished sixth in the team standings with 218 points, while Knightdale tallied 65 in finishing eighth.
“Our girls relays were awesome tonight,” said Comets coach Dawn Norris. “We were dropping times — almost everybody on the team dropped their times.
“To do that, coming off of Christmas and exams, and not practicing as they normally would, is just fantastic.”
Zsoldos topped the list of fantastic efforts with her pulsating victory over Holly Springs’ Mariel Gulyes in the 100-yard freestyle, winning by the narrowest of margins: one-hundredth of a second.
Dragging Gulyes up and down the length of the pool until the final 25 yards, when the two appeared synchronized in side-by-side racing, Zsoldos out-reached Gulyes at the wall, winning in a personal best time of 59.66 seconds.
Gulyes had won the 50-yard freestyle earlier in the meet.
“I knew it was going to be close,” Zsoldos said.
“I had been checking our times before the race, and I saw there was only a one-second difference between us, so I felt I had a good chance.”
In addition to her individual victory, Zsoldos teamed with Emily Duff, Kelsey Boykin and Sarah Frantz for victories in the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. Duff and Boykin added respective individual silver medals to their hardware haul for the Comets.
Duff claimed runner-up honors in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 17.16 seconds, while Boykin needed 27.37 seconds to place second in the 50 freestyle.
Frantz placed third in the 200 freestyle in 2:18.57.
Clayton received additional gold-medal performances from Danielle Murray and Blair Altman, respectively. Murray needed 1:19.69 to win the 100 breaststroke, while Altman won the 100 backstroke in 1:10.98. Altman added a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 6:09.2, and Murray captured a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:11.62.
Also placing second for the Comets was Nicole Peters in the 100 breaststroke. The Clayton “B” relay squad of Murray, Altman, Jenna Silva and Brianna Creech took third in the 400 freestyle.
Creech enjoyed a good day on the individual level, placing fourth in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 200 freestyle.
Silver added a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and Jordan Johnson placed fifth in the 200 individual medley.
Clayton’s “B” squad also placed fifth in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle events.
Henry, the reigning state champion in the 200 individual medley and the 2007 state runner-up in the 100 butterfly, set personal bests in winning both events for the Wildcats.
Capturing the IM in 2:02.52 and the fly in 56.25, Henry said her efforts were for her team.
“It’s a big meet, with seven or eight teams here,” Henry said. “We just want to do our best to get the job done.
“These are my best times ever... I’m real happy about that.”
Kate Pearson added a third gold medal to the Wildcats count, winning the 500 freestyle in 5:43.0. She picked up a silver medal in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 2:07.8.
West’s relay teams of Henry, Pearson, Anna-Marie Fritz and Sam Mussler placed second in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle events.
The Spartans received a third-place finish from Cameron Mast in the 50 freestyle via a 29.93 clocking, along with fifth-place finishes from Elizabeth Ashley in the 50 freestyle and Regan Gatlin in the 500. Mast and Ashley teamed with Eason Armstrong and Amanda Murray to take fourth for Smithfield-Selma in the 200 freestyle relay.

Please read this week's Clayton News Star regarding the High School Swim Conference. For the first time ever my daughter was McDonald's Player of the Week. Just bragging. With all her health problems over the last year she never dreamed that she would be in shape for this.

Last night after reading the paper my daughter broke down in tears. As we hugged I reminded her that she is on a team and she stated that without the support of that team she would never have come this far. She does swim on a year round team, Marlins of Raleigh, but I am proud of every single athlete.

I still contend that some reporter should do a story on the swimmers who are qualifying for the Olympic Trials, from our area. They deserve support and praise!

    Go Comets Go!

    Grace
