Okay, we moved into this house over 3 years ago. Found a road sign upstairs. I know the garbage collection will not take it. It is one of those huge road signs w/ capital black letters that says ROAD CLOSED. It was w/ the house when we moved in. Any idea where to dispose of it? Anyone here w/ the DOT that wants it? Too big and trying to rid this house of clutter and just junk. Any ideas, let me know. Thanks, Stephanie--mom to 7
I would contact the Sheriff/Police. I forget where I was recently, but the paper had an article where the police showed up on a fairly innocent inquiry and saw a DOT sign and arrested the occupants. If you initiate it, it should not be an issue. If you tried to get rid of it someone may drop a dime on you.
Thanks. Do I really call the police for this? Isn't there maybe a DOT department that would take it? Don't want trouble, just want to get rid of a sign that came w/ the house--LOL. So, do I call the non-emergency police #? This is crazy! no wonder the former occupants left this sign here. Urghh. Thanks. Stephanie--mom to 7
DOT would work if you can get a hold of them. Definitely would call non emergency number (should be in reference sections of phone book).
Doesn't Tawiii work for DOT? Maybe he could tell you who to call. Or maybe I'm just confused. :? You might want to PM him, though, just in case.
Yep, sure do. If you live in Johnston county you can call the resident engineers office in Smithfield (919)934-5863. https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dot/directory/authenticated/UnitPage.aspx?id=1758 If you live in wake county you can call the district engineers office at (919) 733-7759. https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dot/directory/authenticated/UnitPage.aspx?id=1839. You could just tell the receptionist who answers what you are wanting to do and they will be able to put you in touch with the right person.
so, tawii, is it illegal to stop and pick up a sign that's been mangled by being run over? dot's not going to try to straighten it out and reuse it, are they? i've got a couple of them (mangled ones) decorating my kid's play area in the back yard. the highway patrolman next door has never said a word....
Honestly, I can't answer that. It is a good question though. I see signs laying all over the place. Think I'll ask about that.
Heck I remember when we were kids. We used to Quote: Borrow the street signs to make floor boards for our cars. and they also served as great inside pannels for the rotted out part of the trunk. * OOOOps we were bad ole puddy tats. i Guess.
My daughter wiped out a "Mile Marker" sign on her way home from college, rolled and totaled her car. Just minor cuts and bruises. For Christmas I contacted DOT in the state we were living and they had that mile marker sign duplicated for me. It was her gift from Santa. 20 years later she has it in her home and gets a lot of questions from all her friends.
Stephanie, I know a lady that works at the DOT and here is what she had to say this morning about your question concerning the sign: If the property (house) is within the city limits-it is the city's property and they need to be called to come get it. if the house is located outside the city limits- the state would get it- their phone number is: 919-733-2520. hope this helps. jean_penny@ncsu.edu
