    Hi everyone --

brand new to this forum -- My husband & two boys will be moving to the johnston county area this summer -- we currently live in Huntington, NY (Long Island)

We are looking for a community with good schools -- one for kindergarten --other 7th grade and larger lots --

I will be coming down presidents week -- so far we will look into:

    Glen Laurel
    Riverwood
    Chadbourne

I was wondering if anyone else knew of some other areas which would be good to check out? Thanks in advance for any help :)

Welcome to 4042! I can help you on a couple of things I knew of. Glen Laurel is a nice subdivision not too far from where I live (Flowers Plantation). They have different lot size that you can choose from, as well as homes. I believe if living there, the schools would be East Clayton, Riverwood Middle, and Clayton HS. Across from Glen Laurel, there are several other subdivisions are under construction (Lemar Homes).

Riverwood is a big subdivision with small lots, but I think the lots are bigger if living by the golf course. There are two schools on premise (Riverwood Elem/Middle). They have things going on, like from Christmas event to sidewalk carnival, stuff like that. It's a nice place where most families are living there.

As for Chadbourne, there is one in Garner that I know of (I'm a mail carrier and I deliver mails in Chadbourne), but I don't know any Chadbourne in Clayton. If it's Garner that you're referring to, then that place is very nice. I believe their school system is located in Wake County. I would say that about 40% of the Chadbourne home owners are real agents. They stay for a year or two, then sell their house for investment.

Depending on where you work, Chadbourne is closer to Raleigh while both Riverwood and Glen Laurel takes about more than 30 minutes drive to Raleigh, depending on traffic pattern.

In my own opinion, Johnston County schools are better than Wake County. We are pleased with our child's school system, that they offer tutoring when needed.

I hope this helps. I know some other 4042ers live in Glen Laurel/Riverwood and I'm sure they can help you more with this. Good luck and best wishes on finding your dream home! :)

I believe Chadbourn is in the Johnston County school system. Lots of Chadbourne residents are regular volunteers at West View Elem. I believe Chadbourne children attend WestView Elem, Cleveland Middle & West Johnson High

You're right. I mentioned Wake County because of Garner address. I checked with Chadbourne customer and turned out that the schools are Cleveland, Cleveland, and W. Johnston. Sorry. :)

NY to NC - first of all, welcome to 4042 and to North Carolina! I live in Chadbourne, and we really like it. It is in Johnston County and my son goes to West View Elementary, it's a great school and only 2 years old. Our lot is 3/4 acre, which isn't as big as we want it but it's big compared to a lot of neighborhoods around here. (by the way, my house is for sale if you're interested!). The middle school is Cleveland, and I don't know about it since I haven't had a kid that old yet, but a lot of other people on here do.

I know a lot of people like the Flower's Plantation area which is in Clayton, and is becoming a little "town" of it's own, with grocery stores and restaurants, offices and things like that right in it. I don't know about the school though. They have a lot of different neighborhoods within it, so you could have your choice of how big/expensive/lots...

There's also a neighborhood called Forest Oaks, it has a Smithfield address but it's close to an area called McGees Crossroads, and it has very nice houses on nice sized lots, some are as big as 2 acres. I think these are Smithfield schools though (maybe McGees?) and I haven't heard a lot about these schools because I don't live out that way.

I really appreciate your help -- the chadbourne community in garner is the one we were looking at -- it does look very nice. I also am looking at these areas since the schools look better suited. They seem to be less crowded than wake county and more personalized.

I also saw flowers plantation -- that also seems like a nice community and looks huge!

thanks again for your help :):):)

IMO, Johnston County schools are MUCH better than Wake. If only for districting, that's enough! I moved here from Wake County right before my son started Kindergarten, just because I couldn't deal with the schools there. You never know (literally!) from one year to the next where your child will be going (in wake county). The only time that happens here is when they build a new school in your area, and your child might get moved to the new school, which is to avoid overcrowding. But that only happens every few years, and it's usually I think more with Elementary schools than the others. I may be wrong, and if I am someone on here will be correcting me shortly!

New elementary school being built on Vinson Road right next to one of Glen Laurels entrances. Should be open by September 2008. Glen Laurel children will attend this school. Will be named Powhatan or Vinson Road or a combination of both. There is land right beside this new elementary school that a middle school will be built there in the very near future.
Glen Laurel is a great community. A mix of good ole Johnston County natives and many from other parts of N.C and other states. Several ladies Bunco, Canasta, Bridge Club, Walking, Golf, Book Club and tennis groups. Mens poker and golf groups. Dinner clubs. Children's Activities. Gator's Swim Team. 4 1/2 star Golf Digest rated golf course.

Welcome, I was born in Huntington Hospital, I wish it was my sister who was moving down, she lives in Huntington Station. Most of my whole family is still in the Huntington area. There are a lot of Long Islanders down here, you would be surprised. I think McLemore Estates is beautiful also. Big houses on 1 plus acre.

thanks so much -- my husband and both my sons were born in Huntington Hospital -- We live in LLoyd Neck -- and enjoy it very much due to the large lots -- but not the taxes and everything else everyone moves away from here for.

However, the schools are good and Huntington is a fun town. I will miss it I know -- just a different chapter in my life now. Maybe to start a slower pace -- not so much rush - rush - rush

    thanks for your post :):):)

Honestly, it got more rush, rush for me because now all the relatives visit all the time, and there is so much to do here, and trying to work, but the atmosphere and the air is cleaner and clearer down here,,, kids are now raised, Cleveland Schools are great, no problems there., You will love it down here, Good luck on your house hunting.

    A +1 for McLemore Estates.

I think 5 homes are up now with a cap of something like 25 homes total. Not 100% if it's 25 but it is not planned to be a HUGE monster developement.

    Welcome to JOCO.

This is Wake County schools - but smaller area and not the typical Raleigh feel of Wake County or Wake County Schools... have you looked at Tavernier (hwy 50/1010 area) or Everwood (White Oak Area) or Harrison Place in Fuquay on hwy 42, Kings Ridge (nice upgrades for the price) or lastly Banks Pointe in the Garner/Fuquay area (love this place too)? They are mostly all year round schools in Wake County though. That is one of the reasons we are choosing Wake Christian for our 5 year old instead of Wake County schools, plus we like the environement at Wake Christian! But just throwing out an idea! I love Chadbourne too though! Go to www.fmrealty.com and in subdivision type in these locations!! :)

Also just curious (truly I am not trying to start anything bad for those who think this is to try and start up an argument LOL). How did you find this area from NY??? Little ole Jo Co, clayton, Garner area??? I am born and raised in this area so I love it of course, but like hearing others stories!! Welcome!!! Hope you love it here!!

Hi and welcome to the area - whichever area you choose! :hurray:
I too am curious as to why you're choosing this area to move to. Is it jobs, climate, locale or what?

I have always wanted to move to North Carolina at some point in my life -- I always felt the weather and locale would be better. When I visited the Outer Banks and came to North Carolina for the first time three years ago I loved it. Everyone was sooo nice. Then last august when I visited raleigh, I loved it, again really nice people. Not that there's not nice people up north, but its different. I have lived in New York all my life, born in Brooklyn, my husband in Huntington.

For my husband's job purposes we narrowed down on the raleigh area. I originally was looking at wake county, but since we were looking at larger lots we had to start looking around these areas. Also, I found out through another chat area, city data forum that wake county schools are becoming overcrowded very fast. When I visited in august I could see that first hand in some schools with the trailers being visible.

My main focus are my children. I would rather that they don't have to travel miles away to go to school, and would like to know what school they will be going to, these are some problems in Wake county. This is why we are looking at Johnston County -- the schools, cleveland and riverwood are rated well, and that's my main interest. Schools first, house second.

My youngest, a 4 1/2 year old -- kindergartener in the fall will not only be new to school, but new to the state. If he can go to a school nearby, that would be a huge relief to me. We will be able to buy in a good area, our range is in the 400's.

Again, I thank everyone for their help. I value these forums very much as this information is invaluable to me and my family.

I'll chirp in for Forest Oaks! Great neighborhood and developed nicely. Lots of trees between houses and my lot is .80 acres. Most houses have that craftsman home feel and look to them. Not a whole lot of kids in the neighborhood yet, but in the Spring/Summer/Fall, neighbors are always out walking around. We have a monthly newsletter and every quarter or so, a social. I would encourage you to check it out.

If you're looking at the Glen Laurel area and have $400K to spend on a house you might want to look into these communities too. http://www.kirkwoodbuilders.com/

    Best wishes on your search!
