I would not suggest anyone move to or around the Glen Laurel area right now. With all the new subdivisions going in and schools traffic is going to be a nightmare. Head towards the Flowers Plantation!

    Hi NY to NC.
We're from your area of the world- born and raised in Kings Park, Long Island. I spent many a night hanging in Huntington. When I grew up, it was the only place to go nearby.

We live in a very nice neighborhood called Dell Meadows- not too far from an elementary and middle school- right near a high school. I can attest to the quality of the schools since my husband and I both work for JCS.

Anyway, ever since I moved to this neighborhood, I've been saying "this is just like how I grew up on Long Island." People watch out for each other, and everybody is really friendly. I can call out to the kids in the street (we live on a cul-de-sac) to watch my 4 year old while I finish dinner and they do it happily.

Not that we don't like Johnston County, but we're moving to teach in an American school overseas. So we're selling our house and it's nowhere near 400K. It has 3 bedrooms and a GIANT bonus room, beautiful molding throughout, and lots of nice extras. It's on an almost 1 acre lot with lots of hardwood trees. If you're interested, I can send you some pictures. Just think of all the money you can bank.

And good luck with your search. And if you need to know where there are decent delis, pizza places, or bagels, let me know. We can't compete with NY around here, but we try.

thanks so much for your posts

Kings Park huh? Yeah, Huntington is fun -- still is after all these years, I came here 15 years ago -- still a very hopping town. Thanks for your suggestions -- we are looking for a 4 bedroom house since my mom's coming with us. We also would need the bonus for a pool table room -- since we have a full attic & basement now, we need a big house to be somewhat comparable.

Regarding bagels, pizza, etc -- I know there's a NY Bagel place in Cary -- that has excellent bagels -- went there when we visited last -- original NYers running the store. And now there's a Ralph's Italian Ices in Cary also -- but in Johnson county -- are there any places you suggest?

Thanks so much for the responses :):)

There is a Ralph's Ices on US 70 in Clayton also,,,, Now you can't beat Big Steve's when it comes to bagels ( that is if you want your bagels to taste like LI.)

We live in Riverwood. We have been in our house June will be 2 years. We love it. We have great neighbors and really love the community. My daughter is in the 2nd grade and she loves it. She also attends the Before and After at the Riverwood Child Development Center. We love it because everything is right here. She loves having the pool and the school and we love the trails and the gym. The community is very family oriented. The schools in Johnston county are great. We moved from the Cleveland area and we loved Polenta. When we were looking for another house, we wanted to make sure that we stayed with the schools around the Clayton/Cleveland area. Riverwood Elementary is great, we still miss Polenta, which was great also. You cannot go wrong with the Johnston Co. Schools or the County itself. Would not trade it for anything.

As a former neighbor - I lived in Northport for many years..lol - I think Chadboure is great fit.
You will miss the beach either way. The traffics isn't really bad and the commute to Raleigh is good. I do it everyday. Just like the expressway - only with a lot less snowdays.

I moved from Wake county schools. Their re-assignment policy irked me, as well as their patronization of the kids. Nothing like Huntington or Northport around here but there is planty in Raleigh. ( I wonder sometimes if Raleigh is about the size of Huntinton.) After the Big Apple everything else is kinda small.

I like it here alot. As long as you come with an open mind you'll fit in great! No one ever wants to hear how it was done "up North." and I have only run into a few who are still fighting the Civil War. :)

    thanks so much --

I'm pretty sure right now we are zeroing in on chadbourne, glen laurel, riverwood -- just was hoping for bigger lots -- in riverwood they look very close together --

We are moving to North Carolina for a different lifestyle -- not that we won't miss NY -- of course we will, but I would never harp on it -- we have thought about this for over 2 years -- this decision will be thought out very carefully.

Thanks for responding -- its comforting to hear opinions of others :)

The only thing I miss about Long Island is the parties. I come from a very party family. There is a party for everything, so I miss all my relatives. I can't always just stop what I am doing and go up there for every major party. (Baby showers, baptisms, birthdays, etc.) I do try to make all the weddings thou. Other than that, Cleveland area is just like a remember growing up on LI. Cows, pastures, etc. but now all that is going away also.

I agree with you! I lives in Flowers area and it is a very nice quiet area. We love it here. It only takes me 30 minutes to reach Garner where I work. Not bad to commute from here to there.

If you are looking at Chadbourne check out homes build by Custom Craft Builders (sorry DMJmom ). He builds an awesome house! He also has homes available down the road @ 50/210 Morrison Manor (hwy 50) and Brighton Ridge (hwy 210).

Tell him Sandy sent you. 8)

Oh - Welcome to North Carolina (almost)

Thanks a lot!!! I guess if I were buying a house though and looking for someone to refer me, I'd rather it be someone you know than just someone you've talked to online and never met! But my hubby does build a nice house, and that's not just coming from me, he's won an award for every parade house he's had, and even a couple best feature awards...and that's not me advertising for him, I'm just sticking up for him!! (by the way, he doesn't build in Chadbourne anyway, except for the house we live in)

    McLemore?

Earlier on this thread somebody mentioned the subdivision on McLemore - I think it's McLemore Estates? It's the one with the brick houses, I think they said there's 5 houses in there so far. Does anyone have any info on this subdivision? Hubby and I were looking at it but were skeptical because there's not much going on in there. Was wondering lot sizes, prices, plans? Is it just one builder or many? Any info would be great!
