Description To whomever shot my son's cat today either with a bullet or a BB off Buffalo Rd in Archer Lodge. I would love to meet you face to face. I want you to know that you broke several hearts, including 2 children's and my own when you shot Jessi, our 2 yr.old black & white cat. She was a wonderful, courageous cat with a unique personality who somehow even when dying managed to make her way home to our door but it was too late. We raised Jessi & her sister Sassy from the moment they were born & I raised their mother Patches, from an abandoned infant found in the woods. We lost Patches to a car & now Jessi to an idiot with a gun. Sassy is now alone having lost her sister and my kids are left with broken hearts at your cruelty. I hope you are pleased with yourself for you took the life of something better than you.
 Some people suck..........................I hope they find out who did it and hang them up by their toenails.
It is terrible that anyone shot the cat. It wasn't the cat’s fault that the owners were irresponsible. It had to be traumatic for the kids when one cat got hit by a car - but it doesn't sound like the pet owner did anything to keep the other cat safe. I find it sad that the pet owner says the cat "somehow even when dying managed to make her way home to our door". It's too bad that the cat wasn't at home already. I think its great when folks help the strays in the woods - but these cats weren't strays. I know that it is hard turn an outside cat into an inside cat - but the individual clearly says she raised these cats from infants. This individual chose to let the cats run loose regularly. Being a pet owner is more responsibility than throwing a bowl of food out. If a car killed one of her children - my guess is that she would have taken steps to make sure the other kids were safe. The cats in her care deserved the same. I think it is awful that anyone would kill another individuals pet ... but it sounds like the individual who wrote the article is as responsible for her pet’s sad outcome as the sorry individual who shot the cat. Hopefully this individual won't be down at a shelter adopting any more pets. It doesn’t sound like a safe environment to me.
:-( Poor kitty. Apparently someone emailed the owner and said he/she wasn't being a responsible cat owner... http://www.4042.com/4042classified/index.php
After reading that she doesn't sound quite as bad as I first thought ... but she still should accept part of the blame. Taking responsibility of 3 cats ... knowing her husband is allergic doesn't sound like the best of ideas. I'm sure this woman is a good, decent person who truly loved her pets ... but it was still her job to keep them at home. I would NEVER shoot anyone’s pets and would never condone someone else doing so. However, sometimes I do get annoyed with cats that run around. At one time there was a cat in my neighborhood that used to run into our house anytime he could. If my husband was working in the garage - sometimes he would leave both the garage door & the house door open. On more than one occasion the cat ran right into the house & up to our bedroom. At the time we had a 140 lb Rottie and I was afraid our dog would hurt the cat. It’s been years ago ... after they unsuccessfully searched for the cat’s owners, one of my kind neighbors gave the cat a forever home. Currently I have a cat that visits ocassionally. He's cute & seems nice enough to me ... but he's not as friendly to my 6.5 lb dog. My dogs are in the house ... or in our fence. But the cat keeps jumping into the fence. He's bigger than my dogs. He keeps eating the food out of their bowls. I've chased him off a few times ... but he still comes back. My husband has caught this same cat digging through our trash a couple of times. As others have mentioned in the past, I also have a sandbox on my back porch that my kids play in ... and I dont think its fair to have to clean up after someone else's cat. He's not wearing a collar ... but he looks cared for. Somehow, when folks see a dog involved in these same types of behaviors they seem to understand the necessity in taking measures to make sure the dog stays at home ... however, it seems that folks almost find it acceptable when dealing with a cat? I know its hard to take care of outdoor cats ... I just think its wrong to ever purposely raise a cat from birth as an outdoor pet. This woman should have placed the kittens in a home where they could have been cared for if she wasn't able to raise them correctly & keep them protected herself.
Well Melynda, despite the fact that both mine are spoiled rotten indoor cats, I wholeheartedly disagree with you.
What is it that you disagree with me on & why? Folks don't always agree ... which is one of the things that makes life interesting. Just because a couple of folks don't totally agree on something doesn't mean one is good & the other is bad ... or one is right & the other is wrong. I realize that I am definately NOT always right & after listening to others ... sometimes I can see their point of view better ... if they take the time to let me know "why" they think I am wrong. I've still got lots to learn ... and because I've never had a cat as a pet ... I'm sure I'm not as well versed on the subject as others.
Because lots of cats live very happily out doors. Some of them, no matter how hard you try, will NEVER adjust to living inside full time. My aunt's farm has oodles of barn cats, they keep the rats and mice down and have a JOB to do. She hand raised one of my cats on a bottle, when she could have just let it die, because that was a whole lot of work when she has 100's of cows to take care of. (Actually, it's the one in my avatar. I took her outside for 5 minutes so she could get some fresh air.) But I guess since they were "outdoor" cats, then she's irresponsible? I don't think so. Should they be out destroying other people's property? Absolutely not, but the solution is definitley not shooting the poor things. Just keep in mind, that not everything is "one size fits all", not even in pet ownership.
Yes, cats DO love being outdoors, it is their nature - however in this day and age it is simply not safe, legal, nor considerate of other people. Traffic, disease, getting caught in MY sandbox (that will get you a one-way trip to the pound), other predatory animals. There IS a leash law in this county.
My aunt is in VA, and there is no leash law, she's out in the middle of nowhere on a dairy farm. I've got ZERO problem with you calling the pound on a cat in your S/D where it isn't supposed to be. What I do have a problem with is someone shooting and torturing a defenseless animal.
 i'm sorry your cat got shot as i am a pet owner. and am on the fence as i have mixed feelings about this issue. i had a cat in my yard for 2 days that wouldn't leave. don't know how in got in because i have a 6ft wooden fence.( the cat had a collar with tags) i have 3 dogs that wanted to feast, i tried to catch to call the owner but it was cold scared and hungry so couldn't catch it. i didn't bother calling pet control cause i saw it late 1 night by accident and figured it got in it will leave. i didn't let my dogs loose on it like my husband said cause i felt bad but hte second night i was already annoyed and let them loose and it left. then last wed. i arrived home late from work as i was retrieving my pale i had a golden retreiver jump ON me from behind and it scared the living life out of me. i have pets love them but don't need yours to intimidate me personally or tresspass on my property. if you can be bothered to walk and entertain your pets then 1- don't have any 2- if your kids want them that bad then give them the responsibility 3- fence in your yard 4- if you cant afford to fence in your yard get an invisible fence as i dont agree with shooting anything i also dont want or need to be harrased and tresspassed against by your laziness and neglect
Some very good points - unfortunately the person who wrote the piece ( the owner of the cat who was shot ) did not post it on here - the poster who placed it here got it off the 40/42 classifieds. I doubt they are members of this forum, as if they saw it here, they likely would have commented on it.
thank you zookeeper. i did see that it was originally from the classifieds, but i just needed to vent about the issue.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat, I'm a pet owner and would be devasted. on the other hand, you can't let your pets roam. Other people don't want animals in there yards. I'm not excusing the shooter, but you must understand that if you are going to be a pet owner, you are responsible for them and you must keep them under your control at all times. Please don't get anymore pets if you are going to let them run freely. no offense intended.
I was a horrible person who let my cats roam, but I've since changed my ways because I realize the dangers that lurk. I've moved, installed a vinyl fence which they can't climb or jump over, but mostly keep them in the screened in porch. They still think they're outside, and whined constantly for the first week, but now they've gotten used to it and are happy. I feel a whole lot safer now, and recommend to other people to quit letting their cats roam too- -it is unsafe.
