There is a group for younger men, Order of DeMolay ... I dont know if they have active chapters around here, or not.

Really? Do the same rules apply for admittance?

I was never a DeMolay, so am not sure of the membership requirements. I'll try to find out if you have a son (or know someone) that's interested. There is not a local chapter, probably closest would be Raleigh.

Isn't there also one for women called "Sisters of the Eastern Star"???

Yes - it's Eastern Star for women, and Job's Daughters for teenage girls, DeMolay for boys. I was in Job's Daughters when I was a youngster ... :)

Funny story. I went to Lowes this morning to buy a new bird feeder. As I am checking out the young girl at the register looks at my Masonic ring and asks what my ring means. I explained I am a Mason and it’s a fraternal org etc etc. She looks at me amazed and says “I didn’t think they were real people” She saw Harvey Keitel in National Treasure and just thought Masons were made up. I assured here we are not and she said she couldn’t wait to tell her dad she met a real life Freemason. I then killed her to keep our secrets!(OK made that part up)

Not only am I a Mason I am a senior member of the Order of Demolay. Sadly, membership in the order has dwindled since I was in. At last count, the state of NC has 112 Demolays. My membership as a young man made a big difference in my life. I was around decent men who took an interest in our lives. I learned to conduct myself in group meetings and learned the art of public speaking. As head of my chapter I learned to plan events and work well with others. Kids today just are not "joiners" like when I was young. Too many distractions these days.

    stonecold,

I agree that the Masons and Eastern Star are fine organizations. I have witnessed first hand the change in a person's life because of the principles of these organizations. My mother tells me that her father was a Worshipful Master (not sure if she is correct because of Alzheimer's and brain cancer) but I do know every male in our family is and has been a member of the Masons. Most women were and are Eastern Star (not me).

Maybe if you continue to educate people these organizations can attract people who do not know about them or who are members and don't attend meetings anymore. I admire you for your dedication.

    Grace

Actually that is kind of sad. Wonder if she even knows who Benjamin Franklin is, other than "some old President who's picture is on the 100"

My grandfather was adopted out of Oxford Orph. in 1878 by a couple in Knighdale,I was told that the man that adopted him was a mason ,
My Mother said that when he died that he was buried as a mason by Masons
I'm wondering if they keep records that far back , and if so would I be able to get infor. about him and where would I start(Main lodges??)

The Orphanage in Oxford would probably the Masonic Home for Children. I feel sure they have the records there as well as the masonic records at the Grand Lodge of North Carolina (assuming he/they were made Masons in NC. )These would be 2 starting points for research. I feel sure either would be glad to help.

Do you honestly think that if I knew Franklin was a Mason, that I wouldn't know that he wasn't the President? Reread my post.

Used to do a lot of work in Philadelphia and spent a lot of time at the federal historic site and visited his grave at Christ Church a number of times.

    Scuzze the double negatives.

Hugh, are you suggesting there have been no Freemason Presidents - or is it those double negatives messing my brain up?
