My Mcgee's middle schooler said the first three of any combination is free, but then they charge... (and he threw in that the mus-My Friend packs are tiny)
See, it appears that the .10 ketchup packs are top secret to most Mommy's... I couldn't figure out where my monies were going so fast either....
Now Im understanding why my two girls are opting to pack their lunches instead of buying. And frozen milk?!? Whats up with that? Neither I(nor my cook) ever put the milk in the freezer! We also offered a salad bar for the kids with a variety of fresh fruits and veggies every day. Once in a while, a treat, like pudding. No one monitored what they took although they were encouraged to take "reasonable" servings. My younger daughter was intimidated by the manager becasue she didnt remember her number (on her second day) and was told she better remember it the next day if she wanted lunch. Thats appalling to me. I knew every one of the kiddos that I fed by name. And if I had ever spoken like that to any one of them I wouldnt have expected to have a job the next day.
I would LOVE to. Im bored out of my skull! My app. is posted online with the school system and I wait by the phone with bated breath every day:lol:
The cafeterias here have really gone too far. I do only allow my students to get 3 packets because they're wasteful with them, but if they absolutely need more (like with a big salad) they don't have to pay! I also agree that they pay $1.90 and are given things like burnt pizza and exactly "9 tater tots." Plus, K students get the same amount as 5th grade. Instead of giving extra food away to kids, they throw it away. I just don't understand the reasoning there. I understand they are all just doing their jobs, but it really has gotten out of hand.
Didn't the Regan Administration declared Ketchup to be a vegetable for school lunches! If so do you have an anti ketchup bias!
Well I had about made up my mind to pack my little ones lunch when she starts Kindergarten in the fall based on the last cafeteria thread where kids weren't getting fed..Now I am completely certain I will be making her lunch! Anyone know any good recipes/ideas for school lunch. Maybe all of our kids should stop eating in the cafeteria due to poor service and respect for child customers. If they want to run it like a business I will do the same. Nadia, please go to McGees!!!
No but it is really nice to hear someone have a heart about the way our children are being treated at the elementary schools. One of the previous threads about some of the kids not getting fed and food being thrown away b/c they did not have enough money in their account nearly left me in tears and considering private schools. I for one cannot fathom the thought of my child going hungry b/c of $.40 or so. My mom and aunt work in the local elementary schools and I know they both go out of their way to make sure the kids are well fed at lunch (as I am sure most TA's do). I just hate to hear our schools sounding more like a business and our kids being treated like annoying customers. Like I said, I will just pack my DD's lunch (with ample amounts of condiments).
I understand your frustration if your money is going fast and your kids are still in elementary school. At that age most children can't even count money very well. How can you charge extra for anything? Do you really think they grasp that? Now if your kids are in high school. And your money is pulling a magic act and dissappearing. It's not because of the ketchup packets. All high schools have a fast food line. And a normal line. The fast food lines contain Papa John's pizza, fries, chicken sandwhiches, and slushies. The regular lines are the ones that carry the reasonably priced food. But they are rarely used. Fact: At WJHS there is 4 fast food lines. And 2 regular food lines. And any children who use the regular lines do forfeit over half of their lunch period by just waiting in line. Due to the school population. So in conclusion, schools provide better access to the more expensive lines. So don't blame your high school kids for throwing away your money. Blame the board.
I agree. Elementary kids shouldn't be subjected to a price list. It's ridiculous. Money disappearing in High School is easy to figure out I am sure, in more ways than just the cafeteria.... Another poster made a good point too. My 5th graders eat twice as much as any kindergartener.....and if they get 9 tater tots, well they consider that a good day.
I bet there are cafeteria ladies who factor the human (and reality) side of Elementary children....matter of fact I know there are.
There was a previous thread about kids not getting FED? You cant not feed the kids! It against the law, you have to give them something. I also didnt understand the "no charging" policy here. Everyone forgets $ once in a while. What do they do if your child has no money in their account and they need to eat? Another thing thats bothering me is that my younger daughters cafe. manager keeps sending notes home pestering me for more $ and she doesnt even buy lunch. Ive kept enough $ in there for 2 lunches, just for emergency (like if she forgets or loses her lunchbox) but I get a note every week wanting more $. Also, at the school I worked at, the K-4th graders got a different portion size than the bigger kids. And after everyone was served, we GAVE away the extra food. Why throw it away?
Wait until your kid forgets her lunch money, goes through the line, and has her plate taken away from her, thrown away, and then gets offered a vegetable plate in it's place. Johnston County politicin' at it's best, I tell ya.....
Are you SERIOUS? I just found the email address for the HR person with the schools in the county and politely "followed up" my online app. with a personal email. What in the world is the point of taking her tray only to throw it away? They cant re-serve it.
They started that when they stopped letting kids charge, or call home for lunch money. Toss it and offer a vegetable plate. It's now county policy.
My personal fave is when I send in a check for my son's account, and three days later "Mom. My money is all gone. Somebody has been using my account again". And the money is never found.
Why cant the kids charge? I allowed 3 charges, wrote a little reminder note home, then maybe a phone call if necessary. Granted, there were some kids that took advantage, but not many. At the end of the grading period, the school would hold report cards if there was money due but the school always got their $ one way or another.
