yep yep....or get this...I have twins and they each have their own number, so the cashier just uses one of the acct #'s (cuz she can't tell them apart and god forbid she ask), then one will run out but can't use his brother's acct # to get lunch... NO LUNCH FOR YOU!! GET VEGGIE TRAY!!
well, I understand that, as a lot of NM is spanish speaking. But part of the job description, at least for managers, is to be able to " communicate necessary and accurate account information to students and parents." You cant do that if you cant speak their language.
1. pack the lunch for them and hope they eat it all. 2. Until you've subjected yourself to the lunchroom for a consdierable period of time, you really shouldn't be casting stones at them. These people are dedicated, underpaid, and under appreciated. I've never witnessed any untoward behavior from the lunch ladies towards the students. Perhaps some of the poor service and lack of respect begins with your precious little darlings, who don't know what they want and can't make a choice with 35 kids behind them in line trying to get something to eat. And, since the menu is sent home, you should be able to talk with your child about the choices they are going to make that day, to reduce any confusion. I see plenty of kids that burn up their account with snack foods, rather than the meals that is served. And, of course, your precious little one isn't going to 'fess up and admit to eating the stuff that costs extra. All the food I've eaten in the cafeteria was nutritious and cheap. Go volunteer to be a lunch room lady for a day, perhaps your perspective will change. 3. Respect goes both ways. If you belittle the lunch room staff, and your child hears it, they may adopt the same attitude. Some of the attitude I've seen from overindulged children toward the staff is unacceptable, yet the staff has to take it in. Some kids treat these people like servants. I wonder where they get these ideas.
Neither I, nor the two ladies that worked for me were treated badly by the kids. If there was ever any disrespectful behavior displayed, a quick and quiet word to the childs teacher took care of that. It was a K-8th school and Im sure high age kids might have a little more attitude at times, but my days were filled with smiles, hugs, and thank you's from the kids:hurray:
No offense Hat, but I was counting the minutes till you posted that. I know that school staff is underappreciated sometimes, but I have to tell you, that road runs both ways. In my experience, parents and kids can be too. I'm just saying..............................
With all due respect Hatt....I do not belittle ANYONE or anything in front of my kids because thats EXACTLY why we have all the problems we have these days.....THE PARENTS....that's a whole other thread. I agree respect is earned....but some of those cafeteria ladies start the day out with their rear's on their shoulders. It's not MY kids fault they are underpaid. I know its a tough gig for those ladies.
I have been many times to eat lunch with mine and to volunteer. As far as being upset over the price of ketchup, it really dosen't bother me. I can see where some are upset if they didn't know about it. I have to buy it in stock at home. My daughter won't eat anything with out ketchup. I am just happy to get the little booger to eat! lol
Its NOT a tough gig! I loved going to work everyday. Working with the kids makes you laugh everyday, they say the funniest things! Their parents would be mortified if they knew. I told one boy that he needed to bring more lunch money when his parents got a chance and he said "I cant..my Dad said we're running out of money." Another kiddo said "I'll tell my Mom, she wears the pants in the family" Another kid, when he went to the salad bar, filled his tray with the ICE that was under the pans. I guess he liked ice. I tell you, you dont get that kind of entertainment in an office.
I know that I may be of the minority here but I am not totally opposed to my child paying for extra ketchup/mayo etc that he uses in the cafeteria. You have to do that at some McDonald's. I have also eaten lunch with my children and have seen some children playing with the ketchup packets. It does help to cut down on the amount of waste. I have never heard of them charging for napkins though. I have 2 boys at Dixon and that is where my husband teaches as well. All three of them eat in the cafeteria every day with few exceptions. What I do have an issue with is the fact that an adult (my husband) gets the same portion as a kindergarten student (my son) even though the prices are higher. While I do understand that a school lunch is a cheap meal, there are supposed to be adjustments to portion sizes for age. You also get 1 vegetable and 1 fruit or 2 vegetables with your meal - however if you choose to get 2 of the same vegetable you are charged an additional vegetable price in addition to the meal price. He also has had to put his tray down and go get more change from his room if he happened not to have enough on his account for his meal that day. He could not have even eaten his meal and brought back the change (about 30 cents) when he was done. There is not even any slack for teachers on the "no charging" policy. I do understand the need for some guidelines and policies but I think that different schools handle the exection of the policies in different manners. Dixon is quite rigid on how they handle things. When my son went to Polenta, they were a little more relaxed in the execution of the same County policies.
