Blowing Rock is a really nice town, with or without kids. If you go, stop and get the ice cream, it's awesome!! And the Biltmore house is really nice too, with or without kids. It's pricey, but it's cool to go and see it, it really is amazing. We've gone twice, once with and once without the kids. Our kids are young, and they even enjoyed it. It's nice in the spring/summer when the gardens are in full bloom. If you like wine, they have their own winery and wine tasting. If you're into all the commercialization of vacations, Myrtle Beach is 3 hours away, we really like that too. Tons to do with the kids, you can spend a whole day at Broadway at the Beach, feed fish, eat out, ride the rides, shop...
We love Pullen Park in Raleigh on Western Blvd. They have small amusement rides including a train that will re-open soon for spring. Still a nice place to go on a sunny day.
these all sound great...thanks! I would love to see Biltmore. Anything really...Im just so homesick, I need the distraction. I think we'll do the aqarium this w/e and then maybe Dh and I can have a getaway soon to the Biltmore.
yes, that is a nice place to go on a sunny day, even if you go just to walk and feed the ducks.... you can even grab a hot dog or snow cone at the consession and if go in the spring go across the street to the wral gardens, thats pretty too.
Here ya go! NC Zoo (about two hours away): www.nczoo.org Musuem of Life & Sciences (Durham): www.ncmls.org North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences www.naturalsciences.org Morehead Planetarium and Science Center www.moreheadplanetarium.org Ken's Korny Corn Maze www.kensproduce.com/cornmaze For more suggestions, I would recommend: http://www.visitraleigh.com/
ferrickhead...should have expected you to chime in, as much of a help as you were when we were planning our move! Dont see you on this board often though...thanks...again
Grandfather Mountain is fun, even when it's cold. Suspension bridge, awesome view, exercise, gift shop, and my kids love trekking around on the side of the mountain looking at the little zoo they have there. We have loved the aquarium at Fort Fisher, the Asheboro zoo, and Blowing Rock. Also enjoyed a trip to Chimney Rock, and all of the local triangle kids museums. I hear Wilmington can be fun, with dinner cruises and horse carriage rides and neat downtown restaurants but haven't done that yet. The kids have enjoyed climbing around on the USS North Carolina and the alligator below but didn't really grasp the history with it. We have also enjoyed a couple of quick overnight trips to go snowtubing and skiing at some of the resorts in the mountains. We'd like to check out Winston-Salem to see what is there. Have any of you been there to do any of the historic tour stuff? With kids? If so, how was it?
Thanks for all the recommendations for fun stuff to do. We did the Fort Fisher trip (thanks Cleo)....youre right , it was great. Beautiful weather too....spent some time on the beach as well. Great to get outta the house. We did buy the annual family pass so we'll be checking out the zoo soon!
Glad you liked it! I know it's a little late... but I just found a coupon for BOGO admission to the aquarium. An 8$ value. Anybody want it? Send me a PM. Expires Dec 08.
Just a suggestion about the mountains - you'll enjoy it a lot more if you just take them for what they are, not in comparison to other mountains. You don't go to a lake expecting the ocean. Our Great Smoky Mountains are perhaps the oldest mountains on Earth. Once taller than the Himalayas, they have been eroded over time to the wonderful, unique, biodiverse feature so many of us enjoy visiting. Welcome to North Carolina!
I drove through an area of the Smokies many many years ago and they were breathtaking! Even growing up in the midst of the Rockies, I was taken aback by the beauty! We will definately be exploring them further this summer.
