I think everyone from the twelve departments should be able to get one shot each in for his/her stupidity..........and a fine.

 

yes, this fire has closed all roads that lead on/into Matthews Farm. We were escorted by a Deputy Sheriff' at 4:15 this afternoon to the neighborhood. Many many thanks to our wonderful firefighters from Johnston & Wake, and the helicopter that was dumping water! Hopefully this will soon be under control enough to open the roads.

 

Sonny Rd. is closed. I stopped and asked one of the fire fighters about it...they were rolling up their hoses and packing up. He said there were still some spots being put out, but that it was started due to someone burning who lost control of the flames. What is the fine for burning on a day like today? It should be HUGE.

 

We went by it while all the trucks were getting there and we saw the structure engulfed in flames. When we got to Clayton we could still see the smoke. It gave me chills b/c I couldn't imagine having to go through that in my neighborhood and having to get our kids and dogs out.
Hope everyone neighbors and fire fighters are alright.

 

Everyone is ok, thank goodness! The two structures that burned were barns. Other than that a LOT of land was burned.

It was not started by someone burning TODAY. They had been burning trash yesterday and thought they had it out. Evidentally the harsh winds today stirred it up and started it again.

Thanks to Dangerboy for getting the info on the radio so quickly. You probably saved a lot of folks from getting in the middle of all the traffic and road blocks.

Just heard on the news that over 40 acres burned :cry:

There is another major brush fire going on right now in Smithfield. Flames 100 ft. in the air and 50 ft. from a hotel.

Hubby just got called out for a downed tree on Jackson King Rd.

It's gonna be a loooonnnngggg night.

Scary day in my house

I live on Sonny Road. I've been fortunate to never have been this scared or threatened in my life (and yes, I lived thru 3 hurricanes in FL...which is one of the reasons we moved to NC). This is the first time in my life that I was so scared. When we pulled out of our driveway around 1:30, my husband noticed an odd looking cloud, so we went up the hill to check it out. Then we went around the block, and saw the people on Polenta Rd taking their horses...and that's when my stomach started doing flip flops.

Our thanks to God and our family thanks everyone who had a mom, dad, spouse, son or daughter involved in keeping this fire from reaching or doing damage to anyone.

 

I made my appt, but went on Barber Mill, then Cleveland, then crossed over to Polenta. I didn't see it, but I sure could smell it and hear the helicopters. So glad it was property damage only.

 

So glad you and your family are ok!!! DH said he saw some people moving furniture and stuff out of their houses. I cannot imagine the horror those folks were feeling.

His pager has been going off all night with brush fire calls. There is another one on Cornwallis near 70 bypass and then there was another one near the Polenta Rd. fire.

I'm not sure exactly where the one is in Smithfield but I think it is under control now.

Went out twice this afternoon to get my son's hair cut and both times (live in Matthews Farm) we were turned back and told we could not get out. That was fine with my son.

Did get to talk to Sonny Johnson for a minute and he said he had some woods and a barn burnt but it wasnt too bad. Was glad to hear that.

One of the pictures on wral shows how close the fire was to at least one house. I do wonder though why no one moved that white truck in the picture.

Hopefully a neighbor can stable this man's horse until he can make needed repairs. <My girls would gladly offer our garage but....>

 

Michelle...I don't live anywhere near that area, but tell your DH thanks for taking the risks to be there to take care of situations like this. Don't know where we would all be without men of his bravery!

Probably the same type of idiot who ****es in the wind too. I had a couple of idiots yesterday who thought it would be smart cutting down a 75-100 foot tree with the wind going like it was

I think what I read on wral.com was that the people had been burning on Sat (which it was still too windy to be burning...) but thought it was out and then the strong winds kicked it back up yesterday.
