I messed up. My auto liability insurance has been cancelled and motor vehicle is revoking plates for 30 days. Just wondering if anyone knows if my title can be transferred to family member, or if vehicle sold can new owner get plates right away?

You might want to check with DMV office, there is one near downtown Smithfield (Second Street I think). I went there when I bought my used car from a private party, and got the plate the same day. I have to have insurance on the car, and paid paid some kind of transfer/highway tax. People there are very nice.

I think transfer title for car is pretty simple (seller filling out the reverse part of the certification title and sign it in front of a notary.) The DMV office will file the transfer, and the buyer should be able to receive a new copy of the registration soon.

Call them or stop by there. Hope this is helpful to you.

Or you could go and explain your situation, and probably get out of it that way as well - they can be understanding with people who are truthful and apologetic.

Or....you can follow the instructions on the notice you got, request a hearing from DMV, and typically they will issue you a 30 day tag if your situation warrants (only vehicle, need to go to work, etc).

Just call the number and request a hearing, you'll probably make out okay...

Unfortunately, you still will not be able to avoid the fines assessed by DMV for letting your insurance lapse. Many times I have seen that they will not let you transfer tags/title to another party until you satisfy your debt to them on the vehicle.

No it acually happened to me about 10 years ago, I marched right into DMV and sat down with the powers that be, showed proof of insurance and got everything straightened out.

FWIW, it might have been the very next day after I got that letter and had already gotten the insurance done. They just gave me a "brake". :)

well, if you had proof of insurance you had a case, but if it lapses you don't.
if yours had lapsed and they gave you a brake, you are a lucky one....

It DID lapse and I had gotten it reinstated, and I got a brake. :)

About 7 years ago, I let ours lapse with Allstate. I called them up, paid the $ and asked to be reinstated. They would not reinstate us. No wrecks or bad driving records or anyhting. Said it was some "rule".:evil:

I went with Nationwide and have had "ill" feelings towards Allstate ever since:evil:

You can pay the $100 fine (used to be $50) and you won't have to wait the 30 days. My husband went ahead and paid the fine and they did not make him turn in the tags.
