We have 2 males in seperate cages and I want to get a female and breed it with one of the males so the kids can experience the whole "Mother Nature" thing. I went to both Pet Smarts in Garner Friday night and they each had NO Teddy Bears. Not even a male. Neither did the pet shop at 4042 If any of you happen to see a female, please let me know, okay. Also, we raised gerbils when I was a kid so I am used to their birth habits, etc. I am familiar with Teddy Bear hamsters in general but have never raised them. Any advice would be welcomed! Oh, and I'll let you all know when we have babies ready for new homes:mrgreen:
Try Carolina Pet Supply in Garner... they have small critters and are friendly to deal with. Located off Hwy 70 behind Merchants Tire.
Just an FYI, Petsmarts have "male & female" stores. If you call around, you might find a female store. Other than that, try Petco, Carolina Pet Supply (Garner) or even craigslist.
Seriously? WOW! I never knew that. Guess that keeps a mistake from becoming a litter, right? Where is Petco??
I was just at Petco in Knightdale, they had a female long haired teddy bear hamster. I looked just for you!
thanks kdc, i was gonna say the same thing - Petco in Knightdale (well at the 540 interchange) has a great selection of small pets last time i was there a month or so ago.
I am trying to NOT be a party pooper honest... but I am a foster home for a rodent rescue and we stay SLAMMED full of hamsters because of breeding. They breed and breed and breed.... so please make sure you have homes lined up for all 10 or so babies before you let them breed. (i have had 10-20 in ONE litter!!!) Mom and dad are only together for breeding, not living, or she will cannibalize the babies. (and get pregnant right away) Dad will often time attack mom or babies at birth. Separate males from females at a VERY early age, usually at about 3 or 3 1/2 weeks or they will interbreed. While mom is nursing, if the kids disturb her, it is not unusual for her to run over and eat a baby out of nervousness.... I am not saying you haven't, but please Google "How to breed hamsters' before you choose a female and make sure you are up for it! (Please) I am not trying to tell you what to do, it was just a really rough year last year for hamsters, I got 17 from one person and they were all pregnant or had babies, they were interbred and not friendly etc... Good luck with what you decide.
 Ummmm...I knew some of that, but not all of it. Hmmmm...rethinking things a bit here. Thanks guys for looking for me and telling me about the one at Petco. If I decide to go ahead, I'll check her out. What about the ones you get in to foster? If I do want to go ahead, can I adopt one from you? If I breed them, they will be taken care of properly and I will only breed once. I have 4 kids and each of them would like a hamster so that's 2 homes right there. I remember seeing some of the gerbils eat their young when we raised them. Not fun to see. My concern would be that the kids would disturb Mom and she would eat a baby. But, if I explained this ahead of time, I think they would respect Mom's space. Guess I'll think on it a bit more. Thanks again.
