DS was sick Sun & Mon with a little fever, some coughing, threw up twice. Kept him home yesterday as he threw up once in the AM, was fine the rest of the day. Went to school today, no fever or anything this morning, just had to pick him up early because his temp is 102. Says he has a headache and a stomach ache, but doesn't really look all that bad. Should I take him on to the doc, or just wait till tomorrow and see how he is. I am just undecided. :? Why didn't kids come with manuels??

its a virus, doc won't do anything but charge you and tell you it could last 7 days. Lots of fluids, advil and tylenol, lots of fluids, he'll be fine Mom.

Thank you Dr. Kell. You are probably right. After I typed that, he informed me he was hungry, so how sick can he be? Right? I'm only letting him have crackers at the moment though, just to be on the safe side.

Biggest concern is hydration....keep the fluids pushed. Nothing colored red, because it makes it hard to diagnose at Drs office, if you have to go.

BRAT diet..bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.....plenty of fluids....clear are best..

    and, Chicken soup....

Salmonella??? >>>>>>>>Heading off to Google the symptoms of that! We haven't eaten out lately and I overcook everything meat wise to be on the safe side, and he's not allowed to handle the turtle by himself.

    Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

An infectious dose of Salmonella is small, probably from 15 to 20 cells. Typically, non-typhoidal Salmonella produces a self-limiting febrile gastrointestinal illness that is indistinguishable from that caused by other bacterial enteric pathogens. Dehydration is the principal clinical concern. The incubation period – the time between ingestion of Salmonella bacteria and the onset of illness – varies from six to 72 hours (Mayo Clinic, 2007, April 12; MMWR Recomm Rep, 2001).
Salmonella can cause three different kinds of illness: gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, and bacteremia.
Symptoms of Salmonella gastroenteritis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. In mild cases diarrhea may be non-bloody, occur several times per day, and not be very voluminous; in severe cases it may be frequent, bloody and/or mucoid, and of high volume.
Fever generally occurs in the 100°F to 102°F (38°C to 39°C) range. Vomiting is less common than diarrhea. Headaches, myalgias (muscle pain), and arthralgias (joint pain) are often reported as well. Whereas the diarrhea typically lasts 24 to 72 hours, patients often report fatigue and other nonspecific symptoms lasting 7 days or longer.
I guess it's possible, will keep a close eye on him. Heading off to get him some fluids to go with those crackers............................

There is the flu and viruses going around bad. I agree with fluids, advil plenty of rest. See in a couple of days how he is doing, but if the fever goes up bring him in.

Sometimes if a child is sick and has a low grade fever if they run around or get to excited their fever will go up. So I would keep him calm.

DS was sick Sun. Temp of 104, I took him to the Minclinic at CVS (LOVE IT in and out in 45 min w/ prescription) doc said a Neg test flu bug going around. Meaning they don't test postive for the flu until it's almost over and too late. Kids having to revisit docs offices a few days later b/c they get worse. Kids are fine one day and drastically awful the next.
Turned out DS had strep throat though... and now my throat is starting to feel funny. great.

Yep, it just rattled me that I had to go get him from school when he seemed perfectly healthy this morning, I wouldn't have sent him if I thought he was still sick. He's confined to the couch for the time being.

I've been lucky and he's rarely sick, so I am still a bit inexperienced with this stuff, even though he is 8.5.

A friend had the flu for two weeks with this off and on. He'd fill better for a day then sick/fever again. Throwing up every couple of days.

You as the mom will be able to tell if he needs to go to the dr. I always look at how they're acting more than anything. I'd say watch the fever more than anything, if it doesn't go down and stay down it could be an infection. But if you're lucky he'll wake up tomorrow and it will be gone. As always though, you're supposed to keep them out of school/daycare until the fever's been gone for 24 hours.

Yep, he will be home again tomorrow. I'm sure the school would LOVE for me to take him right back in the morning! He really doesn't look all that bad, or I would have taken him for sure. I guess I was just looking for a little reassurance!

Thanks to y'all for your posts about the stomach flu. DS finally got better Saturday, but then I got it. It's pretty bad, wipes you out completely, pretty much slept all day Sunday. Anyway, had to take DD to the doctor Monday, she was running a fever all day Sunday and just pretty miserable. She tested negative for the flu, didn't have strep but had a sinus infection. She's on an antibiotic now. She seemed better yesterday but by last night was running another fever. Now she's complaining of a sore throat. Doc said there is lots of nasty stuff going around and the crazy weather isn't helping either. Just keep watching and trust your mom instinct.
