I picked up a six foot long black snake (yes, he really was that long!) off my front porch a few years ago, I didn't want him to get in the house and had nothing to get him with but my own two hands! Didn't want to kill him, just wanted to move him. DH was out of town of course!
I'm no snake lover and would definitely not have one for a pet, but I don't think "the only good snake is a dead snake" applies. If you love 'em, more power to ya. But I'm glad they didn't kill the snake in AU. It was just doing what it was designed to do.
Thanks Ken... she's fine.. my own father won't stay at my house because he is terrified of snakes. My mothers only interest in them is that when the red-tail boa should pass-on does she get first dibs at shoes & a belt. Craig is the neighborhood snake-man... when anyone gets one in their yard, instead of trying to kill it right off the bat, they atleast try to get ahold of Craig to come and relocate it for them.
Awww Keeeen, Tassy took it like it was meant. And I don't hate nature for being nature... I just don't care for snakes. And to me the only snakes I can stand are dead ones. Yeah I know they are good to keep mice away blah blah... daddy tells me the same thing all the time. So with that said... This is just a fair warning for any snakes considering entering my yard...It's a death zone. I have a hoe and am not afraid to use it!! So Tassy, don't ask me to snake-sit and I won't ask you to kid-sit.
Does anyone remember George the Burmese Python that used to live at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh? He developed cancer in the late 80s when I worked at the museum. Not long before he died I got watch them feed him a rather large live rabbit. George grabbed that rabbit around the rear-end instead of around the neck and as he squeezed the poor rabbit made a sound I hope I never hear again. The snake handlers had to use this pole thing to choke the rabbit for George. I don't mind snakes (don't want one as a pet though) but after that experience I never want to watch a constrictor eat a live animal again. I don't blame poor old George though... he had to eat and was doing the best he could. He didn't live very much longer after that if I'm remembering correctly. Anywho... I can't imagine coming across a constrictor with my dog in it's jaws. I think I might have to be treated for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome if it had happened to me. Again, those poor kids...
Actually I believe they are already starting to in Florida where things have really gotten out of hand.
I agree, besides I could argue that aside from companionship, snakes and bats are far more valuable animals than cats, as contributers to the world.
Its bad when the burmese pythons are trying to eat the alligators or crocodiles...and end up just busting wide open. There was a story about it not too long ago, the pictures were awful. I think it was in the Everglades that they were having the problems with large snakes.
