If your kids cruise the internet...

just thought I would share. This week as my kids have logged in to sites like neopets, cartoon network, etc there have been ads that are extremely offensive and inappropriate. I am trying to figure out how to block them and have had no luck so far. Even with net nanny. Just thought I would give parents out there a heads up to keep an eye on there computers...anybody else notice this recently?

 

I have seen it on the cartoon network. I don't allow my son on it any more.

 

I do not think that you can block an actual advertisement on a web page, but you can block pop ups. My only reco is to block the actual sites that have the questionable advertising.

 

Nevil responded in your other posting and I am also kind of interested; what do you call offensive?

I mean, something I would find offensive, many others would not, so you might need a pretty heavy duty blocker program if the FireFox/blocker solution he recommended does not work.

I forget what I used to have, I believe it was something from Zone Alarm that you could set to block banner ads.

 

Having 2 boys ages 12 and almost 17, I went with a great site called B-Safe Internet protection services. I can block just about anything out there. It's great. I definately recommend it to any parent that has children using the internet

 

I have software monitoring and make they and their friends know I have it. Heck, I'm the parent, I think! I am with Hught on it is each person's decision what is appropriate or not for there child. Use the options given by others and hopefully that will help.

Whew! 10 hours later...I think I finally got it! It was an ad-spyware that even Mcafee couldn't completely get rid of. I did locate it in my temporary files and delete it thanks to the McAfee software.

Among my daughters friends I am the "strict" mom who wont let her have a screenname on IM...wont allow even a visit to myspace...etc etc etc...it gets harder and harder every day to monitor it and I still have two more kids to go after the 14 year old!

 

In lieu of restricting the access to IM's or Myspace it's better to monitor the child on usage. Both of those items are the way of the future. You can't stop progress. Even though there's a small percentage of bad involved, there are also many good things about both. Appreciating the positive social and technological impact that Myspace, IM's, and all the rest has had on our youth outways the minimal bad. The answer is teaching them to stay away from the bad. There are plenty of books & software out there to choose from on the topic. Educate yourself on the topic and then educate the child.

 

dan....perfectly stated! She is allowed to IM, but uses my screen name and the computer is in a central location in our house. I am a teacher, and former child protection worker with kids ranging from 8 to 20....I believe in teaching my kids the value of technology and the amazing impact it can have in our lives...and try to instill the values of right and wrong, because the reality is that they are making many moral decisions long before I was ever presented with similar situations.

 

Internet & Kids

What's happening isn't recent, its been going on for a long time & is only getting worse. A few months ago I had an episode that showed me how little protection there really is for our children online. Luckily, they weren't peeping
over my shoulder that day. I innocently typed 'skateboard parks' in the search bar and selected a likely seeming link that advertised such and named a couple of nearby towns, parks, etc. When the page came up, my eyes
nearly popped out and I'm sure my mouth dropped open I was so shocked. It was a page from adult friend finder with lots of nude female pics.
I contacted two local police depts. and cyber angels about it. Then I learned how little can actually be done due to insufficient laws and such, because the internet is so world wide.
My very good friend is head of Kids Come First Online NC. I wish all parents would visit their sites & learn more about what we can do to protect our kids.

I keep the PC in a central location and read over his shoulder frequently, monitor the history, etc.

I thought myspace changed the age reqirements, and kid cannot have accounts now? I tried to set up an account earlier this morning, and it would not let me. I played with the birthdates, then got bored and moved on.

 

I agree we need to protect our kids. We have been watching regular cable Tv not HBO or anything and they are using all the language you would find on the closed networks all times of the day. WOW. I have children I am trying to keep innocent as long as possible, not ignorant just innocent. They are way ahead of us in knowledge it is almost scary. FYI We switched to MACS and monitor heavily. I think by the time kids get to high school there really shouldn't be much restriction. Who cares if they see some innappropriate advertisements? At that age hopefully their eyes can handle it. But as for middle school age, I can definately see where restrictions would be needed. As for IM and Myspace. All kids should be able to use those. It's a fun way to keep in touch with their friends. My advice to you is...let her make a myspace. Along with yourself. If you have her and her friends added then you can see all that goes on. Kinda a good way to monitor but let her have her freedom as well ya know?

 

Kids start HS in 9th grade at 14/15 years old. Are you serious? Not much restriction?

My son does not want to hear about 2 girls and a cup while he is trying to eat his lunch, from the kid who doesn't have much restriction.

Do you relize 15 is 3 years off from buying your own tobacco products? And the legel age to buy porn?

When do you expect them to come out of that cute little shell? Odds are these 14 to 15 year old kids do more than you would think.

But I guess your kids arnt like that. And neither were you when you were that age? Well I remember what I was like when I was 15. And I remember my friends, and the crazy fun things that we did. And I'm sure we could have gotten in alot of trouble. They call this stage: Being a teenager...

I don't care what kind of mold you try to put teenage kids in. But I assure you, they will never fit.

 

You obviously do not have a child in or near this age range. It's not something you just throw up your hands and say "oh well.. they're going to do it anyway".

Anyone with children has 2 jobs! The first grooms the youth of America, both physically and mentally. The second pays the bills. Looks like your good at both jobs.

The reason we are having problems today is directly related to the sad fact that some parents aren’t doing their first job. Maybe it’s the fast pace life we live in now? Maybe we should take a close look at our society and just slow down a few notches?
