Does anyone have experience with chin acne on cats? The vet says it could be caused by an allergic reaction to something. We have ceramic bowls, not plastic, took away new toys, etc.. but have found nothing that causes it. He only eats Purina One dry food, and has since he was a kitten with no problems. I wipe the chin off with a soft cloth and water, but put nothing else on it since the vet said not to. Articles online suggest using Neosporin etc..to clear it up. Anyone have any luck with this?

I've had that problem with one of my own cats as well as with an occasional foster cat. I GENTLY scrub the affected area two or three times a day with a cotton pad and witch hazel (a mild astringent). Seems to work very well. Told my vet about it, and he said he would recommend the same practice to his other clients - so I'm confident that it is not harmful to the cat.

Where do I buy witch hazel?

It should be next to the rubbing alcohol in the pharmacy or health & beauty department of most any store.

You may want to think about checking your water supply :?

Here is why I say that...

DH and I had 2 cats who had never had chin acne since we got them (a few years). We moved to Mauldin,SC and lived in an apartment which happened to bae about 1-2 miles away from a water treatment plant. We lived in that apartment about 2 years or so. During that time, both of my cats developed HORRIBLE chin acne. I mean boils and such. Tried the cleaning it and such, never went away.

Here's why I suspet the water. During that time, I had a boil come up on my leg that nearly had to be lanced. It got huge. I was also plagued with infection under the membranes in my sinus. I mean (and this is gross) I'd have a small boil pop up inside my nose and my whole nose and part of my face was swolen. When the boil was pricked and pressure applied to the nose, well....it was pretty nasty but it sure relieved the pressure. Doc. said I better NEVER let an infection like that go on that close to the brain area. He was horrified. I also had horrible stomach aches the whole time we lived there.

Not enough...well, DH, who is just not ever sick, was sick all the time when we lived there. He even had a boil come up more than once. We were young and stupid back then and I never even thought of it being the water. But now, thinking back, I sure do wonder.

We moved, and ALL of the above (including cat acne) cleared up within weeks  I am so thankful we were not living there when we got pregnant with baby #1

Just saying, might want to test your water to be safe.

Interesting....well, I have two cats and only one is infected. I've started the witch hazel to see how that goes. I also started thinking about the fact that this chin acne started happening not long after I began keeping their food in an air tight, plastic container. I figure that could be it too. The next bag of food I get I'm not going to put in the plastic bin to see if maybe that's it. They say it can be caused by plastics.
