[IMG]One of Johnston County's favorite restaurants is starting to rebuild after a terrible accident last fall. September 21, 2007, a small plane crashed into McCall's, shortly before the eatery was scheduled to open for the lunch rush. The South Carolina pilot, Garry Reid, lost his life after losing control of the aircraft. Worth Westbrook, Randy McCall and Jim Grady, all co-owners, plan to have the restaurant reopened in the summer. Many employees from the Clayton location have been working out of the original Goldsboro restaurant. Insurance is covering the costs of rebuilding; including about $1.4 million for a year's worth of salaries for the 75 employees and lost revenue while the restaurant is closed. The electrical wiring in the kitchen needs to be redone. Some ceiling rivets popped out in the kitchen, apparently from the force of the explosion, McCall said last week. "The damage is worse than we thought when we originally looked," he said. General manager Terry Tyner states the restaurant is pretty well gutted.
[IMG]Walls and ceilings are still covered in soot from the crash. Almost everything inside will be replaced. However, most of the structure can be salvaged. The entire roof will have to be replaced due to extensive damage, and its reconstruction should begin shortly. If you're having cravings for their famous buffet and down-home country cooking, patrons should be able to dine in June or July.

Hopefully the food will be better once they reopen!

Yes, I know I will get slammed for being overly negative but...

What makes you think a plane crash will improve the food? The place was barely a couple of years old to begin with. There's not much they could do that they weren't capable of doing when they first opened.

I was there once, the food was OK not great but not too bad. It works well for us as a buffet and it is another option besides Golden Corral.

(For us ... buffets are the bomb with two small toddlers!!!)

The place always looked packed though so somebody liked it!!

    Wilbur's definitely is the Bomb.

Stephenson's is just as good to me, and family style is better than buffet! YUM.

I don't know. I went there once and didn't see anything special about it. It wasn't hideous or terrible, just not as impressive as some people have suggested it was.

We went a few times. Food is edible, but nothing to write home about. Service was horrible once, but hopefully they will have new waitresses. Not at the top of my list, but will go if someone else wants to.

My kids LOVE Ernie's Buffet in Dunn! I take my parents there often. They live in Coats and its about the only good sea food around there. That is unless you go outside of Dunn on Hwy 421 toward Spivey's Corner. There is an awesome sea food buffet on the left. I don't know the name of it , but it use to be called Captain Willie's back in the day.

Try Salem Pizza In Salemburg. Very good buffett-much more than Pizza and really inexpensive. Good stop on the way to the lake.
