Anybody have any good recipes for turnips? I have steamed them and eaten them "plain" with salt/pepper/butter, and I made a cheesy turnip & carrot dish. What else do you do with these things?
My mom used to chop them to bite size pieces and cook them in with her beef stew and irish stews, yummy!
Now that's a good idea. Just use them in place of potatoes in stews and whatnot. I bet they would be tasty in a Shepherd's Pie.
Just for Kimmie Cheesy Turnips and Carrots INGREDIENTS 3 cups diced peeled turnips 2 cups sliced carrots 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 3/4 cup water 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup diced celery 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 cups milk 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS In a saucepan, combine turnips, carrots, ginger, water and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cover and cook over medium-high heat for 10-15 minutes or until vegetables are tender; drain and reserve liquid. Set vegetables aside. In a skillet, saute onion and celery in butter until tender; stir in flour, pepper and remaining salt. Add milk and the vegetable liquid; bring to a boil. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Stir in cheese until melted; stir in the vegetables and heat through.
she also used parsnips in addition to carrots in stews too. Are you just trying to eat more turnips... or did someone leave a bushel of them at your doorstep...LOL
Can't say I've ever had turnips... but if they're along the same lines as cabbage and collards, I'll pass.
I love turnips too. I use them in place of tators in a recipe. I also remeber someone using them to make lowcal french fries..... ill ahve to look that recipe up. My favorite way is with cream
Thanks for the reminder Koo, I've got some cabbage I need to eat as well. Any fabulous recipes out there beside boiled/steamed/salt/pepper?
Have you ever made your own egg rolls? Shred a bunch of cabbage as the base and cook it down with some baby shrimp, diced chicken, pork, whatever ya got. Shredded carrots, scallions, soy sauce, maybe a tiny bit of chicken stock for flavor, then stuff the wrappers from the produce section. Fry them just for a minute or two until the wrappers are browned. Sorry, I hardly ever use real recipes, but these taste so much better to me than the frozen ones most restaurants use.
:ack::ack::ack: just can't do it, squash, okra cabbage......love it...... collards or turnips :ack: it just leaves more for yaw.... enjoy!
You could not pay me enough money to put a collard or a piece of cabbage in my mouth. I ain't eatin' nothing that stinks that bad. Nasty!!!
