I am trying to avoid constant trimming along the chain link fencing in my back yard. I mow close on both sides, but the grass is strong growing in and through the fencing.

Anybody have any reasonable suggestion for "permanently" killing the fence grass?

As long as your careful I don't see why weed killer wouldn't work. Just don't get it on the grass you wish to keep.

Round-up or (used to be) even cheaper... gas, kerosene or fuel oil.

I used white vinegar to kill the weeds in our pathway, I did it in the morning on a hot sunny day and it worked real well.

Get Gly Star - generic Round Up - and a lot cheaper

Pretty sure Agri Supply carries it. Check around.

Gly Star is great but it is very hard to find right now. We've had trouble getting it in. The manufacturer just had a big price increase and our price went up from $59.95 to $94!

Gly Star is made by the same company that makes Round-up.

In that case, I re-recommend a petroleum based product. Fuel oil is probably the cheapest, probably around $2.50 - $3.00 per gallon. Just spray along the bottom of fence. The wider you spray, the farther away you have to cut.

We have the same problem with this thick grass around our fence. We bought something yesterday to try that but I can't remember what we got at the moment. NEED more coffee!

Yup. How much stuff you see growing @ the dead sea? Most all of your weed killers are made of some sort of sodium. Try mixing some table salt @ water and throw it on your neighbors lawn and watch it for a few days ;)

I guess that makes sense.....we have a fenced in yard at our beach house, and the grass is hard to mow around it....I am going to pour me some salt all around the entire thing....thanks for that....not to mention table salt is sure cheaper than all those other things....

I have heard that pee makes strawberries grow better. And yes it is disgusting. I even googled it, and some crazy disgusting people are using urine to grow stuff. Not anything I want to eat any time soon!

Or you could just spill some spent nuclear toxic waste on it. I didn't think anyone was ignorant enough to still pour gasoline in their yard. Its called pollution.

On a more constructive note. Vinegar will work and you would need a large dose if I imagine your fence right. There are also a number of safe chemical solutions out there you can choose from.

I could have gone the rest of my life without knowing that. Especially since I just stopped at Porters yesterday and bought a tub of strawberries and made 2 strawberry shortcakes.
