I am trying to decide whether to buy a regular push mower or one of those reel mowers, just wanted to know if anyone has any opinions on the reel mowers, do they actually work good? I don't have any fancy type of grass, mainly what I call weeds that look like grass, so wasn't sure if they only work good on certain types of grass.

reel mowers are what all golf courses use. you can't get the cut they need using a conventional mower. That being said with the prices I've seen for reel mowers why not just buy a regular mower?

I was just thinking of a reel mower for exercise purposes, but did not want to waste time or money if it wouldn't cut the grass at the same time.

If you decide to buy a reel mower go to Agri Supply in Garner. I think I remember that they are around $90.

Don't forget it is a lot more environmentally responsible.

reel mowers don't work good cutting tall grass or weeds. Unless you have zoysia or are maintaining bermuda at 1 inch or less, you don't need a reel. Also, they require periodic maintenance. You have to adjust the bed knife to the reel. The reel needs to be back lapped occasionally to keep the edges square. You can't mow over sticks, pine cones, or other debris.

Good info! So can one adjust the depth that you cut? Or does it cut really really close?

    someone post a pic.

You're talking about a human powered reel mower, aren't you?

I used to use one of those when I had a small lawn, but here I have about an acre, so I ride around on my environmentally irresponsible John Deere. It is good exercise, but you have to mow often, because it's very hard to cut tall grass and weeds with it. It will do a good job, though.

That is what I thought. Cool! Thanks! Looks like fun to try and use. Good excercise.

I would give it a wirl.

A non-self-propelled mower will work for you and your yard just as well.

Funny story... Gross and kinda crazy, but funny now.

When my mom was a kid, her and my uncle Jerry used to fight over EVERYTHING as siblings do. Well Grandma had company and told them to go outside and play and under NO circumstances to come disturb them and the guests. So mom and Jerry get to fighting over the reel mower (who is gonna use it) and mom's hand goes in, cutting off her finger @ the middle knuckle. So she runs inside and sits in the living room for like 5 minutes with her stump of a finger "shooting blood like a fountain" (not wanting to disturb grandma and company in the kitchen), before grandma happened to walk by and see her. They got her finger and rushed her to the ER where it was sewed back on and she's fine to this day.
