I dont' see anything wrong with the random checks. I agree that they can get a lot of the slime out there with no insurance, DL etc. You would also be surprised at home many drunk drivers they catch in the middle of the afternoon doing this.

well, maybe they were looking for someone???? or maybe there had been a hit & run in that area..... license checks are within the law.

One day last week they were doing one on Mt. Pleasant rd. around 5:30. I was on the way home and I stopped but they flagged me on through and didn't check my license. Then on my way to take DD to work they same officer stopped me and checked that time. I was so nervous and I was totally legal!

That's where I thought it came from. Are you sure they weren't looking for a VW Microbus with shovels and rakes and other implements of destruction?

(as an aside, Stockbridge, MA was the location of a specialized boarding school my ex-h went to...and the town was definitely like that!)

(taking my spot on the Group W bench now)

Howabout if the cops just start going from house to house asking to look inside, just to make sure you're not doing anything wrong. I mean, what's the harm? Unless, of course, you're commiting a crime.

My point, exactly, Clif. Erosion of rights is an insidious process, that begins, but rarely stops itself.

In today's news, I read where the DOJ is now going to start collecting DNA samples from everyone arrested. Not convicted, mind you, but arrested. And, as we all know, the police never make a mistake, investigators never lie, and prosecutors always do the legal, ethical thing.

I would hazard the guess that most people here also have no problem with the collection of DNA of arrestees.

I agree that DNA sample collection of those convicted is legal.

    Arrested? Nope. Invasion of privacy.

If you don't do anything illegal you have nothing to worry about. Let's not start taking everything to the extreme.

They are taking it to the extreme though... i have no problem what so ever with designated barricades for drunk driving checks on major drinking holidays (which include all holidays, to be honest), but to stop everyone on a stretch of highway to do nothing but check their license is beginning to sound Orwellian to me... i think it might be exactly where i draw the line.

Driver Caught With Pot Sentenced To 27 Years In Federal Prison
A federal judge has sentenced a Jamaican man to just over 27 years in prison for having a quantity of marijuana in his vehicle during a traffic stop in Johnston County. State troopers stopped 49 year-old Hopeton Frank Gooden and discovered a gun and the narcotics. Gooden was convicted of possessing a firearm and ammunition by an illegal alien and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Based on Gooden’s criminal record, he was sentenced as an armed career criminal. The investigation began with the NC Highway Patrol and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and was adopted for federal prosecution by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms under the Project Safe Neighborhood initiative.

    NC42 Traffic Stop Yields Drugs
A Clayton man is facing narcotics charges following a traffic stop on Highway 42 in Johnston County. Qauantez Lekeith Woodhouse, 21, of Norris Road was charged after Johnston County deputies reportedly found a small amount of cocaine and marijuana in his possession late Tuesday after being pulled over near the Wake County line. Bail for Woodhouse was set at $10,500.

A Harnett County man sustained minor injuries after being cut during a domestic altercation Tuesday night at a home on Henley Place in Smithfield. Morris Covington, 25, of Coats was injured during the knife attack. Police arrested 18 year-old Jackie Lynn Gregory of George Perry Lee Road, Dunn during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 near Brogden Road about 30 minutes later. Gregory was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. A motive for the assault was not released.

Personally I don't have a problem with license checks. Seems they're working pretty good around here.

No one knows where things are leading we can only make assumptions. I don't want or need a history lesson I am expressing my opinion. We are not a police state and if it ever happens I will probably be dead by then. Ken I know you love to debate, but let me express myself and I will give you the same courtsey. Don't presume to know what my attitude really is.

Oh? And what makes it a police state? Maybe when the police start checking people who are doing nothing more than driving down the road minding their own business?

I'm reminded of Cold War movies... "Papers, please"

I don't presume what your attitude is. Based on your posts it would seem that your attitude is that, as long as you personally are not inconvenienced, then the police can have free run whereever they think they need to be.

And that's the cue for someone to post the famous quote from Ben Franklin.

I understand what your saying clif and I guess they want to randomly check my house fine. If they can get past Mose then more power to them. And I have been randomly stopped because of somewhere I happen to pick my daughter up from. had my car. purse and myself searched and asked tons of questions. Why did i need a gun, why did I have meds in my purse etc. But they were doing their job. I had done nothing wrong except drive down the wrong street. But they opened my eyes to something i didn't know was going on. Yes i was mad to get pulled over and searched... but now that Im calm and not shaking in my knickers... I can see why they did what they did. Their Job. What we hired them for.

I would have figured you for an analogy of blowing up a golf course to kill a gopher (ala Caddyshack).
