I'm curious about what makes people obey the law. Is it respect for the law or fear of the consequences of breaking the law?

Example... let's say (pretend the law worked this way, and the penalty for breaking the law was handled perfectly every time - HA!) that if you killed someone, you would be executed, no ifs, ands, or buts. Would you not kill someone because you respected the law itself, or because of fear of the consequences of breaking the law?

Poll, now with 100% less poll!

for me it depends on the law though. for most things i obey the law because of respect for the laws. for speed limits i obey because of those pesky radar guns.

FWIW, I think it is the way one has been raised - with concern for the well-being of society and one's fellow man. I don't think anyone considering committing a crime thinks for even a second, about the consequences. (Although I have almost no real-life experience from which to speak.)

How about speeding or reckless driving? Adultery? Sexual activities between consenting adults that are illegal in many states? Smoking marijuana. Stealing office supplies. Doing non-work activities while being paid for a job. Underage drinking. Many crimes are committed by generally good people, who would be jailed if caught - but most of us are not, are we? ;)

I agree and regarding thinking of the consequences I also agree, which is probably why those states with the Death Penalty typically have the same murder rate or higher than states that don't have the death penalty.
