I have about 300 of them in a greenhouse in Morrisville. I wish that I could have them here at the house, but unfortunately can't. oh well... RHW
I have 30 or so. I started bringing the poor sad ones that are discounted for quick sale at Lowes, Home Depot, or Walmart, re-pot them and bring them back to life. I give them to my friends/neighbors when they bloom. When they stop blooming, my friends bring them back to me until they bloom again. They are easy to grow, just remember NOT to over water them. Most people kill them that way because they think they are tropical plants and need to be kept moist.
I've been wanting to try my hand with an orchid. What else can ya tell me about how to keep'em alive? I seen some at wally world the other day and almost bought one. The kids rushed me out the door so I couldn't go back through the register. I did get an African Violet. I haven't repotted it yet, so we'll see how it goes.
I just killed an African violet I'd had for years. I could cry! I forgot to water it at all. I always just made sure not to pour water directly on the leaves, just moved them out of the way and didn't splash them.
They can, they just spread out though, not up. Boss's wife has got some that are probably 8-10 inches across. I love them. Think I am going to go get a replacement for my dead one today.
I've always had good luck with mine (until I start forgetting to water them :banghead: ) in the african viotlet pots. The inner pot is unglazed, so the water in the outer bowl seeps into the dirt through the porous clay of the unglazed inner pot. I never had good longevity out of the ones that I tried to water from the top of the soil over the years. I had one that died on me recently, I had it 5 or 6 years, it bloomed the same time every year, it was beautiful. Over the years the stalk got longer from growth and where the older leaves died off, and it got top heavy and I lifted it to look at it from underneath one day, and broke it. I really should have repotted it ages ago... but didn't. Don't forget they like to be snug in their pot as well, don't put it in too big a pot.
i absolutely love orchids ! my mom grows them in florida and i love to see them all when i visit. i like cymbidiums too ! For help with beginners, go to www.carterandholmes.com
Yea, Phalaenopsis orchids are the easiest to grow. The majority of my customers that I sell too, are not beginners. However, I did have a few mom's that I gave plants too that are friends of mine. Included in the orchid, was instructions .... Here is my link to photobucket: http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk110/rhw7879/ That is only a few of them.. I have more pics, but haven't had the time to import them yet.. =) Enjoy!
Thanks Tassy.. I actually tried to breed that one with a yellow orchid to create oranges. But that didn't work... So I will try again.. Rob
