My son has to make it difficult! He's having his fairy tale ball in 2 weeks, and want's to go as Robin Hood. Does anyone have a robin hood costume I could rent or buy (cheaply!) or know where I could possibly find one? I looked up his photo, it appears he dressed all in green, with a green hat with a feather?
Did this years ago for my son...get a really BIG green T shirt. Tatter the bottom edge by cutting a zig-zag pattern. Then use twine as the belt. He can use green sweatpants that are a little too small if he's against the whole tights thing.
That's a great idea, thanks! Did he wear a hat? I don't know where I can get a pointy green hat, unless we attempt to make one! (I'm not very creative, in case you missed that...!)
We made one out of poster board....I'm trying to remember it all. I drew a circle the same diameter as his head (maybe a tiny bit bigger). Then I added an inch or so around it to fold up. I then drew lines like I was going to make triangles sticking out from one side (probably about 6-8 inches??? it's been 6 years, so sorry if it's a little off). I cut from the tip of the triangle to the center of the circle and then overlapped the points, make the hat curve and have the ridge down the center. Then I folded up the extra edges and glued a feather on it. He looked really cute.
Urghh. I have seen that they are having this fairy tale ball but have NOT gotten details on it. So they need a costume now? Why do I not have info? Talked to the teacher just the other day and she didn't mention it. Are they supposed to go as the character of the lines they ahve to memorize? If so, I have to figure out Hansel. So, is this the case? Let me know if they go as the character they are doing hte lines for. Thanks. stephanie--mom to 7
Mom do you know how to make a paper hat? Like they used to male out of newspapers? You can do that with a large piece of green felt and either use craft glue to hold the folds or hot glue. you can also do it with a large piece of construction paper
Stephanie - our teacher had it on her website, but not all the info. A paper came home on Tuesday with the "official invitation". Ours is on the 9th, and he doesn't need his costume until that day, I'm just starting to prepare myself early. Your class might be different from ours, because I don't think he has any lines to learn. Everyone gets to pick their own person they want to be. I know our class is doing it with the class across the hall, so maybe each "team" of classes is doing it differently. But just fyi: our class is doing a parade down the hall in their costumes at 8:30, then going back to the room for the ball, where they have to dance (I'd like to see that happen!) and then they're having a feast. I believe the parents are invited to it all. And I'm not sure what the feast is, but it's going to be early in the day, so doubt it's going to be lunch. And if you want more info, you can pm me. She also said you could just send them in their Sunday best if they didn't have a costume.
Costume Idea I am not a person that sews, but I did make a great robin hood costume a number of years ago. Easy steps: (I promise): 1. Purchase green or brown tights (no worries, it won't harm his future maleness 8))-or if he really objects, get green or brown sweat pants in a size smaller so they hug his legs pretty tightly. 2. Purchase a large piece of green Felt (measure from shoulders to about middle of his thighs and double the length. It will also need to be about 4" wider then his body (2" on each side - maybe a little more, you judge). 3. Fold over the material so that it meets at the edge and feather it or even just cut it with one of those fancy scissors. 4. Now, fold the material in half vertically and cut a small piece out for his head. Better to go small and cut a little at a time, then to cut too big all at once. 5. Get four brown shoelaces (like the kind from workboots - but the dark ones) and punch a hole in each side of the middle of the costume (about at his waist). Thread the shoestring through (this will tie the costume together and keep it on him!). The other two you can glue or punch holes around the "collar" and kind of criss-cross the shoelaces so it looks like leather lacing in front. 6. Hat can be made in a similar way (check out Party City, they normally have hats for Robin Hood). 7. Boots are more smallish-type, a workboot at ankle length would work. 8. Give him a sword and he's all set. Hope I've helped!
Thanks so much FLai! I think I might go with the xlarge tshirt someone else mentioned, but the shoestring is a great idea, and the boots he already has, and I'm not sure about the hat, but might attempt to make it. I will check out Party city though for sure!
You are quite welcome! Good luck! I find glue, string and snaps or buttons can work just as well as a needle and thread...
OK...I've got the xlarge t-shirt, belt, feather for the hat (i still have to make the hat). But I can't find tights - anyone know where I can get green tights? I've looked for sweatpants as well, but since it's summer I can't find any of them either. Not even green jogging pants...And I have no idea what to do about the shoes, his black boots don't fit anymore and I'm not spending money on black boots he'll never wear again. Did Robin Hood wear crocs???
I wasn't sure if that material would hold dye, and I really don't want to spend that much money on green tights for a boy, that I know will definitely never use them again! But I did think about it, that might be a last resort. If I can't find green do you think black would be ok? I know Robin Hood is supposed to be green, but...
I'm really freaking out, can't find tights anywhere!!! Haven't tried thrift shops, isn't there one at 40/42 someplace? I think there's one in Garner too by the old Gold's gym isn't there?
Basic Needs is at 40/42, there are a couple in Garner, not sure about the one you mentioned - but on Tryon rd, there's a Thrift store and a Goodwill. And in Clayton, right off 42, there's a Goodwill. Good luck!
Ok...I've got the boots, shirt, belt, feathers. I found a pair of green pants today, we'll try them when he gets home and he's also got an old pair of green pj pants that are too small, we'll try them too. I forgot about cutting zig zags in the shirt so glad I read this thread again... Now for the hat. I feel so dumb, but as I sit here trying to make it I realize I don't remember how to make one out of newspapers. I know I used to do it all the time as a kid. I see the picture of a hat online that looks exactly like that. I have green cardstock sitting here staring at me, and I have no idea what to do with it! Aaaagghhh! But we're getting close. If I have to send him without a hat I will. As I look at photos online of Robin Hood, he's only wearing hats in 1/2 of the photos. (I forgot to call Party City about a Robin Hood hat - but when I called to see if they had stockings for Robin Hood she didn't mention anything about a hat, so I doubt they have one)
Try folding the felt/cardstock in half, then take the top left and right corners and bring them down to the middle(glue the corners down) then take the bottom of the felt and flip it up on both sides... does this make any sense? See Below
OK. I got it I think! Of course now I'm thinking card stock isn't big enough, too late to run out now to get poster board, can't find any newspaper laying around. I give up! Thanks for your help everyone!
