I enjoy the Olympics (prefer summer over winter), and watch them as much as I can every quadrennial (I even took two weeks vacation to watch the Atlanta Olympics), but this year there just didn't seem like there was anything to look forward to. Until now. This just in... The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that the double amputee from South Africa, Oscar Pistorius, can run in the Bejing Olympics (presuming he qualifies, which I believe he will). ABCNews Article Just a bit of heart-warming news.
I think it's great that they'll let him compete... I love the Olympics, too. My biggest complaint is the way NBC does it. While it's nice to know the background stories to the competitors, I actually want to see the sports...show me the track meets, the softball games, etc.
Clif, Our family loves watching the summer Olympics. Since my daughter aspires to swim in them some day that is the sport we keep track of. The year Michael Phelps gave his spot up on a relay to another great American swimmer who was having a hard time and that relay team won the Gold was very exciting. We cried, we screamed and we jumped for joy. What Michael did that one year showed everyone what they are really about and as a mother I could never have shown my daughter something like that without help from someone like him. Being a good sport, always congratulating the others and being unselfish are vital areas of character. Swimming has taught my daughter much and it is a sport where both an individual and team are respected. Michael's book is a great read. What a humble young man. We will holler for the young man you described in the Thread as well. Another example of a great person. Sherry P.S. For those who do not know...North Carolina has many swimmers who are close to qualifying so keep your eyes and ears open. We have several boys and at least three girls. They are on the world wide circuit and have been doing great. One from Raleigh scored in the top seven. Go us!
