We are getting closer to getting a new puppy, and I wanted to ask if anyone has any recommendations for an underground/wireless dog fence company. I searched the forum, but not having much luck. Any idea of how expensive they are? I'm not interested in doing it myself, I want a turn-key system, we will probably be talking about a 1/2 acre or so that I want covered. Won't need it immediately, but trying to plan for the future! Will be a small dog, most likely less than 30 lbs, probably closer to 20.

    Thanks!! :)

We have Dog Guardian. They do not ask for a payment until you are convinced it works. I don't know if they still come out here- they are located in Northern Wake County. The main thing is the training of the dog. We have 3 large dogs and once in awhile one gets out- usually because the battery went dead. We only have one collar and rotate it so they are trained where the boundary is and when one gets to moving out of it - we switch the collar. Mostly we keep it on the husky. I highly recommend this type of system but you have to do it right and really work with the dog.

We have Dogwatch, nice guy Bill out of Garner comes out, bids, installs, and then guarantees. He also shows you how to train your dog properly. Ours took about 3 days to learn and we love it.

I always worry about these fences... I think it depends on the dog.

    1. We get lots of dogs with the collars on at the shelter...
    2. We have had several hit by car dogs with the collar on....
    3. If the power goes out and you dont have battery back up it doesnt work.
    4. It doesnt keep OTHER dogs out of your property
    5. Some dogs will run out (chasing above dogs) and then cant get back IN....

    So just food for thought....

We have Invisible Fence by Pet Safe, love it, never had any problems, dog is 140lbs. Does not break through never has. He, our dog, keeps other dogs out. The main system box inside has gotten struck by lightening twice in 15 years and Pet Fence has replaced it, free of charge, no questions asked, just had to ship it to them. They have outstanding customer service.

I understand those concerns..............we don't live in the s/d, the only dogs nearby are safely contained, never had a problem with them getting loose, but of course, there is always a first time. We are getting her very young, so hopefully we can do a good job training her from the get-go. DH is also electronically minded, and he'd already mentioned a battery back-up. If we are going to be gone to work, etc. we are also either going to keep her in the house, or depending on the weather, an outdoor fenced kennel. Not sure how all that is going to go, right now, she's just a baby and will be kept indoors at all times. Someone is here at the house most of the time, so she won't be un-supervised outside at all.

I don't even have her yet, hopefully maybe today, as DH is going to be traveling over to where she is, I sent him out the door with a crate and a leash! 8) Note to self: Go get puppy food!

If you decide you want to go with the wireless - PM me... We are going to be selling ours... There is nothing wrong with it - we just got it.... The way our yard is we need to go with the underground fence instead...

We have had invisible fence and love it. We have two big labs on it. And it's so embaressing to admit but my husband and his genius buddies got drunk one year at our Christmas party and decided it would be hilarious to get the collar and "test" the fence to see how the shock was. Needless to say, they all lived to tell the tale so the doggie is not getting hurt or anything.

cece, i was curious how the wireless works? i have been trying to get my husband to put in our underground fence for probably close to a year now without luck, so maybe wireless would be the answer !

It is really pretty easy... The problem is (for us) that to keep him off of the driveway we have to really limit his space to roam. We have an odd shaped lot, so it won't work for us, if he were smaller I wouldn't worry as much - but he is a bigger dog and feel he needs more room to roam. It works in a circle - so, you have to carefully measure took make sure you keep them off the road, off the neighbors lawn.... We are going to have to go with the underground unfortunately - so I guess we will be doing some digging. :-(

People with invisible fances need to realize also a child knows no boundaries. If they wander in your yard....your dog bites. You are still liable. My 2cents.

Then I would suggest putting the wondering kids on an invisible fence too. It just might keep them in their own yard. My buck-fity

    Keep the change. ;)

The only experience i have ever had with the invisible fence was our neighbors that moved this past winter. They had two little dogs and those little buggers would get out of it quite often - i think it was the battery issue too though.

Also..... With the invisible fences or underground - be aware that is your lot is on a hill - and your dog is real smart..... They will figure out that they can make a run for it and make it over...

We've had two underground fence systems throughout 15 years (petsafe and presently Innotek). This type of system has contained all three of our large breeds (hunting dogs) without one incident. If the dog and owner are trained properly, this is a wonderful way to contain you dogs. In the past we had a wonderful fenced in backyard that could never keep our labs contained, they would dig or jump (5 ft. fence) in a blink of an eye. Once these hit the market we bought the PetSafe system the first time and presently have the Innotek system Train and Contain. We've never had one of our dogs break the system. We used the Stubborn Dog collar on our hardheaded lab. When used correctly and introduced when the dog is very young (recommened age is 6 months) the problems are very limited. Our batteries get changed out the same time of the month the heartguard is due, makes things easy this way. We never leave our dogs outside unattended, the collar has a battery indicator light for low battery, different levels of stimulation for training etc., it will take time and patience. As far as children coming into the yard, kids can enter into a fenced in area as well. The one thing you need to keep in mind, is that this type of system is not designed as a babysitter for your dog, only use it when your home. You can also get the type that gives you an alarm if your dog breaks the barrier. We wouldn't trade ours for any other type of containment, been there, done that. Those dogs that want out, usually find a way out no matter what type of containment you use.

yep, yep, I 2nd all of that, especially the part about Dog AND owner being trained properly.

We had one also but it did not contain our lab. She realized in no time that she could run right through it. My husband threatend to hot wire the fence... The lab stayed in the fence as long as we were outside with her then once we were out of sight she took off. I would not recommend it unless you are at home watching the dog while it is in the fence which defeats the purpose of having the fence. Little dogs are defenseless in this environment. My neighbors have one and it has worked well for their three little dogs which are under 15 lbs. The lady is home all day so it allows the dogs to get some fresh air and she doesn't have to worry about them running off. Unfortunately, we have had dogs from outside our neighborhood to wonder their way into our neighborhood so they are not able to take full advantage of their underground fence. Now, we have raccoons coming up on some people's front porches at night looking for food....

Basically, you will need to determine the purpose of the fence so far as how many hours a day will be the dog be in the fence and how much supervision can you provide the dog that is in the fence. These decisions will better help you determine if the underground fence serves your purposes. Anyway, I hope this helps.

    love it/hate it

we have petsafe and 2 dogs. we have had it for 2 years and The older dog has used it since she was a puppy, got zapped once and learned her lesson, so It works great for her. The other dog is part Chow and part DUMB AS ROCKS!! He will take the hit to go roam the neighborhood, he just doesn't seem to care. So It depends on the dog and I think a short haired dog feels it more since my chow has thick fur and doesn't feel the shock as much. Its a contact thing.
