What do you think about this? I think it is WRONG! Not everyone is suited, nor desires, to work with youth. What about the college student who is already time stretched trying to get through school and working to support her/himself and possibly a family?? Doesn't the govenment have more pressing matters to spend it's time and money on?

There is a poll at the link provided.

You can't force folks to at like a responsible human being, if it does stand it should allow for other types of community service.

  3. but didnt high schoolers and college students do a lot of volunteer stuff back in the 50's, I think it kind of ended in the 60's

I agree, not everyone is suited to working with children, but there are plenty of other kinds of community service that can be done.

I remember some attempt recently to require H.S. students to do a certain amount of community service before they could graduate, but it didn't go anywhere. My grandson went to a charter high school, and those kids did have to do community service. I think it's good for kids.

What about the mom or dad of 2 or 3 kiddos going back to school ... while holding a job... to perhaps get a better job to support the family. On top of work, school and trying to squeeze in some family time ...the government wants to take time away, perhaps from that person spending time with his/her family, for any community service? We all have seasons in our lives where we can give more of our time to others. The governement dictating any community service requirement to adult citizens is absurd!

assuming a 15 week semester, 20 hours is approximately 1 1/3rd hour per week. Thats not such an absurd standard for a 4 year degree.

I do disagree with the specificity of the bill, if not the spirit.

In high school I played tennis and had a part time job to go to after practice. I can't even imagine having to do that.

I say NO. Those are two seperate things that don't need to be mixed. The only reason I can understand that is if maybe you want to be a teacher and your going to school for that? Maybe.
