I want to buy an amp from someone in Carrboro. In trying to arrange a meeting place the seller told me that they don't yet have a license or a car so I think I'm safely assuming they are under 18. The only reference to age that I can find on the CL website is that an ad will be pulled if the person posting the ad is under 13. I'm under the impression that I can't enter into a "business transaction" with someone under the age of 18. I'd still feel better with a parent involved but does anyone know for certain what the laws are and how they apply to this situation?
All I know is you can not have a binding contract with someone who is under 18. I'd ask this kid if his mom or dad could meet with you, just to be on the safe side. You NEVER know these days!
That'd scare the mess outta me too (the "under 13" was from the CL guidelines though, not from the seller). It never occurred to me that s/he would be that young. But like turtlepits said, you never know. I had already sent him/her an e-mail stating that they need to have a parent with them at the sale and that I want to talk to them beforehand. I was just wondering what the laws might be. Some 17 year old kids are on their own these days......sad but true. Thanks for the input.
I would be pretty confident there would be a parent involved. The kid probably told his parents one day he wanted to play guitar and maybe he took some lessons but eventually tired of it. So now he wants some money to get his Xbox 360 and the new Grand Theft Auto game and his parents told him that maybe he should sell some of his no-longer-used items and make them money himself. So he put the amp up on Craiglist. Easy peasy.
I know. That's kind of what I'm thinking too. But what made me start to wonder was that when I mentioned a place to meet Saturday morning he said he didn't know if he could get a ride. I just want to make sure he's not doing something he shouldn't and then I get a call from a ticked-off parent because I bought something from their under aged kid........know what I mean?
Certainly. I would probably send him an email and ask a parent to give me(you) a call...just to make sure its all on the up and up.
I just found out some interesting information from the sherrif's office: They came by the other night to get some more info from me regarding the theft at my house. He said apparently there have been a lot of thefts from middle-school (yes, middle school!) aged kids on bikes here lately! He said 14, 15, 16 year olds on bikes riding through neighborhoods getting what they can on bikes and riding off! So just be careful, I thought of this thread, maybe they're stealing it and selling it on Craigslist? Just a thought...
The kid's mom drove her son to meet me yesterday so I could buy the amp. All is fine. And now I get to bring my electric guitar to work with me, too.:hurray: Have I mentioned before how much I like my job?8)8).....Oh, yeah!!
